Kershaw Knives

An outright eye-catching EDC.

Kershaw decided to go blue sky on this one. Literally. The durable and scratch-resistant PVD coating on the Outright is bright blue—and the color is definitely the first thing that you will notice about this attractive pocket knife.

But there's a lot more to the Outright. Its upswept blade makes it an excellent slicer, while the 8Cr13MoV blade steel ensures good edge retention, strength, and hardness. The Outright's handle is matching blue PVD-coated steel with a sturdy frame lock. For additional style and enhanced grip, the handle has an overlay of black G10.

This medium-sized knife opens with SpeedSafe assisted opening with flipper or thumb stud. Hardware (except handle standoffs) and the single-position pocket clip are PVD coated in blue to maintain the knife's colorful aesthetic. The Outright comes in at an outright affordable price, too.

Features

  • Flipper - May be used on either manual or assisted opening knives. The "flipper" is a protrusion on the back of the blade that the user can pull back on, or flip, in order to move the blade easily out of the handle.
  • SpeedSafe Assisted Opening - Assists you to open any SpeedSafe knife quickly and easily with a manual push on the thumb stud or pull back on the flipper; built into many Kershaw best sellers.
  • Frame Lock - A portion of the handle (the knife frame) moves behind the blade to lock it into position during use. This is a safety feature of the knife.
  • Single-position - The pocket clip is in a fixed position on the knife handle; usually it is positioned for tip-down, right-handed carry, though this may vary.

Pros: Handle Feel, Lock Ease of Use
Cons: Handle Material, Lock Type
Good thing it's very pretty
I bought this as a kind of makeshift set of all the black & blues that Kershaw makes, and well they all have the same issue created by different failings. That issue being that they just aren't fun to hold and fidget with. I was never going to use them because I don't want them scratched. The Outright, prettiest of the set, doesn't flip very well. The spring assist starts strong, but after 5-10 flips it stops making it to lockup. It's as if the expansion from the heat generated in the pivot is enough to overpower the spring. The frame lock on the Outright is the best of them all. I'd even go so far as to call it "good". But it should have had an overtravel stop. And the handle, blue aluminum with an almost matching blade, finely textured G 10 layer. I love G 10, but this knife should have had a polished carbon fiber layer instead. It would have made it just that much more eye catching. You'll find a slightly different version of this review on the Natrix and Natrix XL pages, And a very different versions on the Reverb XL page.I'll end this the same way I started it; good thing it's very pretty.

Pros: Ease of Opening, Overall Quality
Cons: None
Solid eye-candy knife
This knife is a typical Kershaw Speedsafe- it always opens authoritatively. It is slightly on the heavy side, but solidly constructed. My only complaint is that the knife is not centered, which is a moderate annoyance, but it performs well. Color gets attention.
