MKM Maniago Knife Makers
The Maximo was designed by Bob Terzuola, the godfather of tactical knives. "Produced in Maniago, Italy" is the theme of the entire enterprise for MKM, which is aptly named. This 'brand' is a collection of four of the top knife manufacturers in Italy working together to consolidate and strengthen their commercial contributions to foreign markets.
They've chosen to work with some highly regarded and sought-after American custom makers to launch the brand and they've already made quite a splash. MKM won Knife Collaboration of the Year with Lucas Burnley and Bob Terzuola at the 2018 BLADE Show, while Viper took home Overall Knife of the Year with the SURU and LionSteel won the Manufacturing Quality Award for the third time in five years. A spectacular start, and one that confirms and fuels the mission of the Maniago Knife Makers consortium and the MKM brand: consolidating the value and style of Made in Maniago, by working together as a team.
The Maximo is a dutiful EDC knife that would also make a perfect backup tactical tool to have by your side. It was designed by the man, the myth, the legend who coined the term "tactical knife", yet its size makes it more suited for utility tasks than straight tactical ones in our minds. It's got a beautiful Terzuola-style drop point blade with swedge and dual thumb stud opening in addition to the flipper tab. The knife is available with a number of different handle material combinations and each has a sideways frag pattern leading to a faux bolster to improve the grip. The flipping action is crisp, the ergonomics are on point, and there's a glass-breaker on the butt end so even rescue knife isn't out of the realm of possibilities. The only question is, which material do you choose?

Frame Lock
Developed by Chris Reeve, it functions like a liner lock but the lock is comprised of one of the handle scales. It's an extremely strong and easy to manipulate lock.

My first Italian - lots of 'personality'
I didn't see the reviews (by the guys we all know) until after I got it. They were right...off center, deployment not that great, not a great slicer of thin paper, but not bad at it either. I was kind of glad because I enjoy taking apart, cleaning, re-lubing, tuning, and re-centering every knife I get - that's what make it officially MY knife. I'm guessing we all do that.The pivots are a bit fussy and I have limited patience and skill, l but I did get the blade centered close enough for me and improved the deployment action, although not exactly WE-ish. The factory edge is great, and I'm not messing with M390 anyway. I don't like thumb studs or glass breakers but the included tool easily made them easily disappear. Now it's really MY knife, and more pocket friendly.So now I'm left with a solid, no-nonsense, just the right size and weight folder that begs to be carried every day. But if you are looking for elegance and refinement, you may be disappointed.
