OH7024: Old Hickory Fish & Small Game Knife

Ontario Knife Company

The Old Hickory line has long been a favorite for modification by end-users. Bushcrafters and outdoorsmen love the heritage, the American-made quality, and carbon steel for outdoor pursuits, often taking the butcher knives and shortening them to a more usable length and adding a sheath for easy carry.

Seeing this, Ontario saw fit to release a factory-ready version, dubbed the Hunting Knife, which featured a 5.5" clip point blade with flat grinds and a swedge. With the addition of a quality leather sheath, this knife could be taken right into the field for hunting, survival, and bushcraft, and of course, it still worked great for butchering and food prep.

The Fish & Small Game Knife follows in the footsteps of the Hunting Knife, bringing a unique design to the Old Hickory lineup with a stock leather sheath for easy carry right out of the box. It is, of course, meant for handling fish and small animals yet it still feels and handles like a full-size tool. It's a great first knife or 'throw in a bag for later' knife - just be sure to oil the blade before you put it away and it will be a faithful companion for years to come.

History

First introduced in 1924, the Old Hickory knives are the most venerable product line still in active production. The Old Hickory knives feature a hardwood handle secured with brass compression rivets to high carbon steel blades that are both very sharp and capable of retaining an edge better than most stainless knives. Proudly manufactured with artisan processes for over 90 years, Old Hickory has stood the test of time and is proven to be the best carbon steel kitchen cutlery sold today.

RIP
Its such a shame Ontario is currently not continuing with the Old hickory stuff, as far as I know. I Got mine on sale for 19$ and its the best knife deal I've ever gotten. a 1075HC USA made blade with a leather sheath. That's one heck of a deal sir. It's a wonderful camp knife. If you just want something for making feathers, and food prep. This is ideal and in a pinch, it can even do some harder tasks. But you'll likely wanna keep it to lighter camp tasks, and use your Hatchet or Becker for the hard stuff. Regardless. Wonderful knife.

Knife is great, sheath is schlock
This is one dandy little carbon steel Kephart - wow, and for under $25 with a no-shipping sale?! How can you go wrong? The knife came shaving sharp. The thin blade is sturdy enough for medium-heavy work, but really shines at food prep and other ordinary tasks. The sheath - well, it's not designed for a knife of this blade shape and it doesn't really inspire a whole lot of "this is going to take care of this knife and not drop it out on the rough trail" confidence - fortunately, I had another sheath lying around unused that fit the knife better. The wood of the scales was a lot prettier than I'd expected based on previous Old Hickory purchases, so I guess I just lucked out. Honestly, I think this is my favorite Old Hickory purchase yet - it's just so darned handy. Wow, it's an absolute steal for the price. This knife is absolutely recommended - not the sheath, though.

Kephart Perfection!
I received this and put it straight to work at testing the handling and functionality of this blade’ 10/10 in that regard! I have always been an avid outdoorsman’ hunting and fishing are weekly occurrences in my home’ I have also always loved the ergonomics of a good knife design and when younger like all smart ass kids “thinks one knows it all” the wisdom of youth’ and bought Ramboesque type knives from 10$ to 550$ dollars and learned what works and does not’ I always went back to a simple green river Hunter and Old Hickory kitchen knives’ I would modify the later and have several still in different locations in each of day packs and vehicles’ they slice like a scalpel’ feather stick like no other’ skin and dress out everything from caribou to rabbit and have gutted almost every edible fish in the northeastern u.s.’ I’m pairing this with an Hudson Bay camp knife and my trusty Tomahawk and will look no further’ this design and in this steel is the ultimate and truest Kephart that I have ever used as a production knife’ it is perfect as a survival/hunting belt knife and there isn’t nothing one with the necessary skills couldn’t do’ I’m truly content and would recommend this knife to every able bodied person who needs a good proven strong design in a knife’ I’d give it 10 stars if I could.
