ON499: 499 Air Force Survival Knife

Ontario Knife Company

The Ontario 499 Air Force Survival Knife is used by several branches of the US Armed Forces. Each knife is manufactured in accordance with US Government specifications. It features a 5" 1095 carbon steel clip point sawback blade with a swedge, false top edge and blood grooves. The handle is made from natural leather with a stainless steel butt cap. The included natural leather sheath comes with a whetstone and leg tie.

treat the leather treat the steel
Bought this knife put oil on the blade, wax on the leather put it in a go bag. Two years later I took it out steel rusted, leather cracked and falling out of the handle. This is in the garage that is dry and cool.Cut some plastic discs shoved them into the gaps of the handle. Blued the cleaned up rust spots. Seems to be holding up.(one year later)

Tough little blade
This is the exact knife I was issued in the US Army in the early 90’s. I was with the Blackhawks, and this knife was part of our survival gear we were issued. This knife is a beast of a little knife. It maybe short, but it can handle a lot of heavy weight tasks. The knife may a bit crude and may not have polished parts of “high-end” knives, but it will out perform many other knives in a survival situation. After I left the U.S. Army, I bought two, one of these knives for my camping and one for my bailout bag.

Great little knife
I was issued one in 1961 mine was a Camillus but it is basically the same thing and I still have it along with a 68 Camillus, and a 1971 and a 2011 Ontario.I drove a M113 armored personnel carrier, a for a short time a M60 tank I carried the survival knife and 1911 colt 45 because I wasn’t issued a bayonet and a rifle.I carry my 2011 Ontario and a Ruger 380 as my concealed carry pistol. The factory edge on these knives is sharp enough for what they were designed for, but if you want to make it real sharp it takes a little effort but it can be done and it will hold its edge. When I got my 2011 knife I sanded the handle with some220 sandpaper and got the leather pretty smooth and I smoked the sheath and knife in Marvel Mystery Oil along with the stone for a couple of days.It gave it a deep reddish brown color like my other 3 knives.Once in a while I will go over it with mink oil just to keel it sealed good enough against Florida humidity and rain.I would recommend buying one if you are thinking you want one, because Ontario has sold the company and stopped producing them, so any of the ones out there are the only ones going to be available. Some people are buying them and selling them on eBay.
