RST7084: Luna ECO - Bronze

Real Steel Knives

Luna ECO as the name pertains is the budget-friendly younger brother of the original Luna. Luna ECO is a complete stainless steel folding frame lock pocket knife. Bohler K110 (D2) a high carbon and high-chromium content is the blade steel for the knife, which is closely related to the D2 tool steel family. Known for its strength and durability K110 (D2) is unparalleled in this category of tool steels. A stainless steel deep carry pocket clip also graces this pocket knife, with a very unobtrusive look, it makes this knife perfect for concealed EDC, tourism knife, and everyday jobs and house tasks. The fact that the knife is also on the weighty side means you are never going to forget it, unlike the Luna which is extremely light. The detachable thumb stud was also carried across from the Luna. With a black stonewashed finish the thumb stud can be removed for two-handed opening or attached for one-handed thumb push.

Beautiful but disappointing
I took a chance on this, despite the reviews, because I love my slipjoint Luna and I really liked the look of this version. Unfortunately I had the exact issues that the reviewer from December of 2021 reported. The detent is unbelievably stiff. You will NOT be able to open this one-handed for the most part (it CAN be done if you catch it just right and with a ton of force). Once open there is quite a bit of lock stick, to the point I often need both hands to close the knife. The centering on mine was off just like the other reviewer, to the point of rubbing on the inside of the scale. I was able to adjust it but not to get it perfectly centered, and the blade doesn't hold what center you can give it, due to excessive pressure from the frame lock. If you tighten the pivot enough to hold center, the blade won't move. I also found the set screw that adjusts the thumb stud to be ridiculously delicate and fragile. I had great difficulty getting it tight again once loosened, due to the tiny socket size. I really wanted to like this knife because it has the beautiful shape and optimal size of the Luna, combined with the coppery / bronze tones of the (anodized?) steel scales and copper pivot. It's a beautiful knife. Also it came VERY sharp out of the box. But overall the experience of using the knife is disappointing. If you can get yours centered, and just think of it as a two-hand opener with a frame lock, you may be happy with it.

Two Handed Gentleman's carry...that locks open.
First off. Don't let the thumb stud/bar fool you. I think this knife is still intended to be two hand open. Left handed you can slow roll it. Right handed you can thumb flick, but it is a little rough using the bar. Where the stud/bar shines is with the knife open. it is the perfect thumb ramp! The fuller is great and functions to purchace on the opening. I moved the Bar just a tinge forward to give me a little more leverage and clearance from the Lock bar. You give up a slight bit of blade but I think this is where nature intended it to be. I wanted to test the blade steel. I am not a fan of D2 because of where I live...The Aloha State of Rust. But I figured I'd give the K110 a try (slightly improved stainless from it's D2 brother or D2 just re-named by bohler? I'll know soon enough). The stock is thin and the grind is sharp out of the box. It's slices like a dream. My thumb can attest to that with a lttle "hello, there, yes I'm pretty sharp," love cut. I am blood brothers with this knife now. Drop point? ehhhhh...slight drop with a little clip, flip a coin, but again...thin, slicy and edc chores, yes absolutely.I dig the jimping on both the spine and bottom of the blade. subtle yet functional. It indexes very well. The weight is not bothersome, but it's not ultralight either. The action is...well, if you think of it as a two hand opener, you will be happy (original Luna, that locks). If you think of it as a thumstud fidgeter, you might be disappointed. ("ECO" = Bronze washers) Detent may loosen up some I'm hoping. What this is, is a gentlaman's carry. The bronze scales with the copper is beautiful. For the price, this is an elegant and gentleman's folder that doesn't break the wallet. I'm lovin it. Time will tell if the steel and the humidity can get along.
