SWEDF1XBELM: F1xb Swedish Pilot Survival Knife

Fallkniven

The Fallkniven X-knife is one of the strongest and sharpest stainless steel knives in production. If your life is in danger, you can always rely on your X-knife. It is designed to withstand all the stresses applied by the human hand, which means that it is virtually indestructible. It assumes, however, that you are careful with the knife and that it is used as intended, namely as a sharp precision tool. A knife of this kind is of course not a throwing knife, nor is it particularly good at splitting wood – for those functions, you'll find an axe to be both better and cheaper. The black coating on the blade offers exceptional resilience with a hardness of 83HRC, giving this knife increased longevity.

The basis of the X-knife's strength lies in the Elmax steel, and also in the well-thought-out construction in which break zones have been eliminated. Together with the hand-shaped convex edge, the X-knife is a concept that beats everything else in the world in terms of safety and comfort.

Beautiful Coating
I used it only for food preparations, because the blade is so beautiful I don't want to hard use it yet. The Tungsten coating is like no other knife I've had, and is stunning. I imagine like most all knives, once you start beating on it the coating will certainly change. However, I am thinking of keeping this as a light use knife to preserve the coating. The handles are indeed a bit harsh feeling (not a bad thing), but in certain instances could be problematic. I am going to carve some new dark Ironwood scales to class it up a bit. Love the full tang, coating, and sheath.

Great knife but…
This is a great knife design. Great feel in hand, carves relatively well, but I have a minor and a major issue with it. The minor…. That handle will raise hot spots in a second and a half, but it is grippy and secure. Use gloves. The major… even the lightest batoning or chopping causes chipping. No major chips, but clearly this knife has a SUB-PAR heat treatment on it. It is brittle. I have M390 Lionsteels, with much thinner blades and flat grinds, that have been put through far worse abuse and show no edge damage. Not sure if I got a lemon, or if this is par for the course. I still use this knife often, but have come to accept I will never have a perfect edge on this knife again. Oh, and the blade coating needs to be stripped off the edge before you start cutting. Mine wouldn’t cut through paper cleanly, but as soon as I stropped it a little and remove the blackening off the edge, it was a razor.

So far very impressed
I've been impressed with the quality of this knife. I've used it for some limited outdoor use and it's held up well and held it's edge impressively well. It's my first Elmax knife so we'll see how it performs over the coming years, but I have no doubt it'll perform impeccable. I have the LamCOS versions of the F1xB, S1xB and the A1xB. I will be honest, for continuity, I do with Fallkniven would do Elmax versions of the other knives as well, but so far this little knife has been amazing, especially in the Elmax steel. I will note however, maybe it's just me, but this knife does feel slightly, but mind you, noticeably lighter in weight. Maybe that's a good thing for you, but relative to the same F1xB in the laminated cobalt steel, this does feel just a tad lighter. I assume it's just due to the composition of the Elmax steel, but otherwise it's been amazing.
