CIVC20038D5: C20038D-5 Cogent Folding Knife - Coarse Green Micarta

CIVIVI Knives

The Cogent is like a button lock version of the old Incite design but with a handle shape and milling pattern we've definitely seen before. The model is not quite coming to us but that's just fine, the Cogent design stands on its own as one of CIVIVI's best and most versatile pieces. Don't believe us, it's one of the only knives they offer available with a partially serrated edge. It may not be the best looker with this edge type but functionally is absolutely unparalleled when it comes to cutting fibrous material like a rope. You've gotta have your plain edge blade hair popping sharp but a run of serrations makes this chore a breeze. Add in the ever-growing-in-popularity button lock and the caged ceramic bearings and you've got a stellar knife at an awesome price point. It makes a cogent argument to be your next knife purchase, will it be?

Almost
First thing, love love love the button lock. This is my second Civivi knife, the first being the Baklash which is about the perfect EDC, put a button lock on it and it would be perfect. So comparing this to the Baklash shows differences. First the flipper is too small, yes it works but takes more force and is harder on your finger. The handle, while nice doesn't feel as good in the hand and the knife balance is farther forward but I do like the jimping on the handle as well as the blade. I also prefer a shinny blade over this bead blasted one. The Cogent has better steel but does cost more. All this being said, it's a nice knife but China made.

Fantastic flipper/button lock
Like a lot of folks have experienced, the Cogent I received had a bit of button stick. In fact, the button was completely seized and wouldn’t push down at all. Very simple to fix if you’re even a slightly capable person. All I did was open the knife, add a couple drops of very thin knife oil onto the button, tap the knife a few times on the workbench to let the oil work itself in and then pushed the button 15-20 times quickly. Once I did that, the knife worked perfectly and continues to do so months after “fixing” it. It’s 2023 folks, not everything arrives perfectly every time. Unfortunately, these days with the abundance of luxuries and services we’re all used to, there seems to be an incredible lack of even somewhat mechanical inclined folks. If you’re not one of those folks, I think this knife will suit your needs just fine.

Mediocre Flipper Tab
I wasn't attracted to this knife in G10 scales and loved the photo of this knife in 'coarse green micarta' scales, which looks like a rich brown green in the photo. In actuality, the knife is more a dark green US Army color with no dark brownish tint in the micarta scales. The button lock works well to open and close this knife with ease. However, using the small flipper tab to open this knife with my medium sized female hands/fingers is very difficult if use for me, unlike with the 5 other Civivi flipper knives I own in other styles (ex: Elementum, Brazen, Baby Banter, Chronic and so on.) The extra recessed and small flipper tab is next to impossible for me to actuate and it hurts my finger to use. I've only successfully opened this knife with the flipper tab twice in over a dozen attempts and I will no longer use it that way because its design failure. I am keeping this knife despite the US Army green micarta scales and lousy flipper tab. This makes the 175th knife I own and the majority have been purchased from Knifecenter, including this pocket knife.
