CIVIVI Knives

CIVIVI Knives are the kind that you give as a gift to a friend, whether or not they're into knives. Anyone will feel the quality and attention to detail as soon as they pick one up yet their price points will signify that these knives are built to be used. As direct competitors against the Spyderco Tenacious and Ontario RAT 1, it's honestly no comparison and we definitely know which is the best choice. Considering the materials are comparable, the amazing action that CIVIVI Knives possesses makes them the knives to beat in terms of the value folding market.

The original Elementum was a no-frills, straight down-to-business utility folding knife. It was a bit too compact to be used for self-defense but many of its design features paved the way for it to be an excellent EDC blade, one of the best around, and CIVIVI's best in our opinions. This was mainly thanks to the thin, ergonomic handle with no hots spots during use and a very simple utilitarian design. The drop point blade transitioned into an ergonomic handle that seemed to melt into the hand while the textured scales provided ample traction and the deep carry clip kept it securely attached to your pocket. The Elementum was designed for easy carry but some wished it was a little larger and more capable as a tactical blade...enter the Button Lock Elementum.

For this design, CIVIVI not only changed up the lock type but also went with Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel for the blade and lengthened the design about an inch overall. This makes for a completely different knife, in the same footprint that we all know and love, but this one is just downright better. The Sandvik blade will take a razor-sharp edge and provides excellent stainless properties making this a great outdoorsman's knife. The pocket clip is now reversible for left-handed users, however, the button lock still favors righties. The lanyard post is now hidden on the backspacer - which is an excellent design choice, and the only thing that might make it better is a flipper tab. The Button Lock Elementum is ready for all-day use, tactical scenarios, and the outdoors while remaining one of the best, most capable knives at this price point.

Disappointed
Overall I would say that this is a decent knife for the cost. Good size and shape but the button lock is where I find the fault in the design. While the concept of the button lock is simple it has failed me in function. Out of the box all worked great. But after a short time of edc the button lock stiffened up and started to fail in allowing the blade to open and close smoothly. For the short time I edc this knife I find it disheartening at how quickly I began having trouble opening and closing the knife due to the button lock sticking. I believe the design allows fine grit particles to get into the button lock and prevents the smooth operation of the locking mechanism. I have found this knife to be unreliable and have since replaced it as a edc knife. Not a knife I would recommend

A fantastic edc that has been over-hype
This elementum is the perfect edc for an inside suit pocket or a clutch purse. When open, it’s the exact same handle/blade length dimensions as the ESEE 3. Sure, all the thicknesses/tallness are different, but it’s one of the most practical and all around useful size ratios. I’m used to cold steel as an edc but all I can think when I hold this knife is “thin!.” It’s great for a waistband or suit jacket carry and many folks might be overlooking its best attributes in lieu of all the passionate discourse about a button… Love it, hate it, it’s not an auto and it’s just another lock device. Nothing earth shaking, but certainly not something to be mocked. It’s clever. Not for the fidget factor, but for how it allows you to carry in the pocket. No flipper tab or thumb studs to snag, super thin, smooth but matte and grippy micarta - and if you remove the pocket clip, you have a disappearing smooth oval with no sharp edges that is less intrusive than a bic lighter. Civivi has dialed in their micarta - it’s not as dark as it appears in the KC photos, it’s closer to a light grey, but it may take time for oils to darken it. It’s texture is akin to the Kizer Sheepdog micarta or the ESEE linen micarta for their 3/4/5/6. It’s Fantastic. A smart dude once said “Everywhere you care to look, you will find that the wealth of the wealthy springs directly from the poverty of the poor.” I don’t know about all that, but this micarta is the bomb. Once you get the hang of the button, it’s just as fast as thumb studs or a flipper tab and your hand lands close to where it needs to be. I think this button is fantastic for the profile it allows you to carry with. It will not open in your pocket, it’s the right tension. It’s hard to describe - I was skeptical about this elementum and ordered it half expecting to return it, thinking it was probably a gimick. it’s cliche, but you really DO have to hold it in your hand to ‘get it’ I don’t find it as fidget-inducing as the AD-15 or a flipper Sheepdog, ANY knife will become a fidget toy if you have enough free floating anxiety… This is a phenomenal knife for $68, sorry. The edge is sick - it’s perfectly symmetrical, shaves hair right out the box and has a gentle hollow grind that’s easy to maintain. What’s not to love? Ok my one gripe, just to seem objective, is that it REALLY looks like a painted blade (it’s not, it’s stone washed) but it REALLY looks like it’s painted. I’m not a Civivi fan boy - this is my first one. Is it overhyped for silly reasons? Maybe. Is perfectly treated 14c28n and great micarta with a bangin’ edge and a novel lockup mechanism worth $68? Umyeah. c’mon man. It’s a no-brainer, Jack. I’ll do you one better:I prefer their 14c28n to S35Vn - fight me!
