CJBJ1917DM: Ria Folding Knife, Denim Micarta - KnifeCenter Exclusive

CJRB Cutlery

Ever pick up a knife and just know that it's perfect for what you need it for? That's the Ria from CJRB Cutlery. Its compact size and slender form factor are easy to carry and keep out of the way until its number is called. Then, when you need it, the blade rockets out thanks to a sharp detent and perfectly placed thumb studs. Whether you follow the shape of the handle and ride the thumb stud upward, or you're more of a 45° flicker, it rockets open every time. We view it as a pretty minimalist knife with a good size and width blade for its diminutive package. The Ria is ideal for daily carry and is priced so well that you can get a second to throw in a go-bag or a car so you always have a cutting edge close at hand. This KnifeCenter exclusive version comes with premium CPM-S35VN stainless steel and denim Micarta handles.

Gone the Ria
My reason for purchasing this was the good reviews that it had received. I have purchased knives from knife center close to 10 years. Without looking through all of them, I think this is probably an easy choice for my least favorite. The size of it is small enough where it feels uncomfortable in my hand. If I can engage the thumb stud with my thumbnail, I can flip it open. Trying to do it with the meat of my thumb results in it hurting my thumb. I will not say do not buy this knife, but I will say if you don't wish to be disappointed, get one in your hands before you pull the trigger.

Awesome knife, knifecenter exclusives continue to be the best version
Don’t listen the complaints from the people complaining about it being small, or hard to open with large hands, or the detent being too hard. One guy has xxl hands as stated he had no problem, I have xl and I’ve had no problem, and it’s not knifecenter’s job to tell you that a knife is too small for your hands. They list the every dimension and spec on the site. Instead of crying about knifecenter not warning you, the one person, that they don’t know, that this knife could be tough for you to open, read the specs, not hard and it’s your fault not theirs. There is nothing wrong with a tough detent on a knife because it will break in. It’s much better to have a heavy detent than one that’s too light. As far as the detent being “heavy” or “hard”, that’s mostly comes down to how you apply the pressure to the detent. Because of the geometry between the thumb stud, pivot point, detent location and depth, as well as the ergonomics of the handle, you just need to learn the best way to open it. In some knive you can apply pressure at the 11-12 o’clock position and it will fire out like a rocket. Due to the knife being very slender, short and the thumb stud placement, this knife works better using either the slow roll out, or you need to find that perfect angle to push out on the studs to get it to pop open. It’s just basic mechanical physics. With a wider knife, the margin of force application is greater in order to to push the blade out to “pop” open and to defer the detent. The distance from the stud to the pivot point is not only shorter but the stud is very close to the pivots vertical axis, which means that you can’t apply pressure as much upward pressure to defeat the detent without increasing the force needed due to the lack of leverage as a result of the stud being so close to the vertices axis. If the stud was further out from the vertical axis then the leverage affect would enable to you to more easily pop open the blade. In this design you need to push more out horizontally say like 10 o’clock so easily defeat the detent but that decreases the amount of force applied vertically that is responsible for the “pop” opening. This knife is great. I’m not a small knife guy due to the needs I have on most days but this one is. Great looking gentleman’s semi formal knife. It’s awesome at doing small knife tasks like slicing apples, opening packages, cutting strings and so on. These knives are made 100’s at a time maybe even a 1000 in a day. Anytime anything is manufactured, especially on a large scale, there will be be some variance in the details like edge sharpness, detent depth. And anyone who knows anything about making micarta knows it’s almost impossible to get the same exact color from batch to batch, and anyone who’s taken photos, especially product photos knows that the lighting can change the look, the shade, the depth, and even the texture of things compared to in real life. Denim micarta can come in many colors, just like your Levi’s. Within the same stack at the store having a variation of the “same color” blue, you’ll get the same thing with micarta.

The Good, the bad and somewhat ugly!
Let me start by saying I own about 2 dozen knives that are all used for EDC. Most of them have and will continue to be purchased at Knife Center. They have been very helpful answering my questions over the past few years, so 5 stars to the company. I really debated about returning this knife which would have been the first ever so I will start with my concern...the knife does NOT look like the knife COLOR as shown on the website. I went back and checked again before writing this review and it was not what is shown. The knife is described as "Denim Micarta" and is even shown next to some blue denim jeans. I loved the color shown on the website which is a "blue/greenish" knife. The knife I received is a dark grey/ medium grey quite similar to the pattern shown on the website on one side and a medium grey/light grey on the other side. So if you are attracted to the color shown on the website, then the color gets a solid 1 rating IF all knives look like mine.As another reviewer commented about, the thumb stud is clearly the smallest of any knife I own. I would say my hand size is average for a man and so putting a little bit of pressure down on the thumb stud does the trick. This is NOT a knife for you if your hands are large and you plan on opening the knife with one hand as most all of us do. I give the thumb stud issue a 3 rating. Finally, the overall look and purpose of this knife for me. A knife this size (blade under 3") is generally what I carry for an EDC when I am not working around the house and yard. The knife is light weight, a deep pocket clip and extremely fast opening. The clip is a bronze/gold which contrasts nicely with the dark/medium grey on that side. At only 4" in overall length, the knife is easily contained discreetly in my hand. It is comfortable holding when open but caution should be used when closing with only one hand, especially if the blade is held in the up position. As quickly as it opens, it takes little to close it once the liner lock has been released. Quality looks good on this knife with the blade falling dead center in the middle. If the color of the knife is NOT an issue with you, then this is a very good, sharp, nice looking knife.
