CR4040G: Joe Caswell 4040G Provoke Gunmetal

CRKT

The powerful Provoke Desert Sand morphing karambit knife is a different take on an instant classic. Built with the Kinematic innovation, it transports covertly and comes to life when called in for duty. Crafted with D2 steel and finished with Cerakote® for enhanced protection and a unique color, it’s poised to become a staple of standard issue.

Around here, we think of Designer Joe Caswell as somewhat of a mad scientist. When we got an eyeful of the sketches that were to become the Provoke—designed in Newbury Park, California—we knew he was destined to become one of the most innovative designers the knife world has ever seen. Modeled after a traditional karambit, the hawkbill-style blade is forged of premium D2 steel for high durability and excellent edge retention. It’s finished with a gunmetal finish that gives it a classic appearance.

The opening mechanism is pulling the folder into the future whether it’s ready or not. Thumb pressure on the upper crossbar sets the chain reaction in motion, causing the blade to lunge to action while you’ve got a firm grasp on the handle. It’s crafted of aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum for supreme toughness and finished with a matching Cerakote coating. In true Joe fashion, the pocket clip is also a world’s first—sitting almost completely flush with the handle and likewise activated with light thumb pressure.

The Provoke Desert Sand comes up strong when it’s called in for duty.

How Kinematic Works

Nudge the upper crossbar with your thumb—while the rest of your fingers firmly grasp the handle—and the blade lunges to life and locks into place. Shift the discrete lever at the base of the finger loop and the blade retreats into its closed position.

Pros: Blade Material, Blade Sharpness, Ease of Opening, Handle Feel, Handle Material, Lock Ease of Use, Lock Type, Overall Quality, Pocket Clip, Weight
Cons: None
Solid Build
Strong, heavy blade, well constructed and secured. Deploys with a solid click and no wobble on deployment. Arrived sharp and a little stiff the first time I deployed it but it settles down and deploys easily after three or four cycles. Pocket clip is secure and easily popped out to hook into pocket fabric, carries deep and well out of sight. Ring makes a good knuck and folded knife is secure in the fist if you use it as a koga for hammer strikes with undeployed blade.
