Description

GB000759: Gator Machete Jr.

Gerber

Built just as tough as the Gator Machete, the Junior is shorter and more packable. The two-sided blade has both a fine edge for hacking brush and vines and a rough cut saw edge for cutting branches, limbs and small trees. It's a high-carbon steel shaft with a Gator grip handle. For backcountry travel, when every bit of weight is accounted for, the Gator Jr. is the right machete.

Cons: Overall Quality, Materials
Poor excuse for a Machete
The blade is thin and soft. The saw on the back doesn't work well. This machete didn't last me long, and I decided to get something I knew would last.On the positive side it's very light and the sheath is decent. The handle is very grippy, too.In my opinion, Gerber is ruining their good name with products like this.

It has a role
Have given it light duty use camping and clearing brush; backpacking. The thin blade and construction make it light and packable but also limit it's capacity. Hard strikes on hard wood or at an angle could trash the blade. But the thin blade means the saw is useful, particularly if you carefully sharpen the teeth with a small file. And if you use the blade skillfully it can cut reasonably well. I always sharpen before first use. Steel seems medium hard. Best to have a small file or lap in the field for touchups. The sheath is adequate for purpose but a bit bulky. Kydex would be nice. Overall, it fills a niche for a light duty, compact, brush and light wood cutter.
