Marttiini Knives

The Lynx was the first knife to be made by Marttiini, and it's been in continuous production since the factory's very beginning. The Lynx was awarded the "Best Product" award at the Viipuri Fair in 1932. The main characteristic that makes the Lynx popular is the blade's curve. The slightly upturned blade tip makes it easier for skinning and to lift to a hot kettle from the camp fire. The blade has a beautiful mirror polish finish and comes inscribed with "J. Marttiini, Finland" on the blade flat. The Lynx features a brass bolster, a pommel and a leather sheath. The design and decorations on the sheath also reflect their strong Lappish traditions. Lynx knives continue to be manufactured to the original Marttiini design.

The traditional handle material of Finnish knives is curly birch. This tree grows mostly in central and eastern Finland. The fiery looking curly birch is perfect material for a knife handle, because it's durable and beautiful.

Pros: Finish, Handle Material, Weight
Cons: Blade Material
Feather-Weight Hiking Knife
Very light weight, general purpose knife - good for day hiking. Jack of all trades, master of none. Blade: nice size and shape. Cleans easily with water. Sharpness is a grade "B." NOT ferro rod compatible. (A friend and I tried to sharpen the spine. We could not get it to spark at all.) Handle: Curly birch is pretty. Comfortable. Lacquer is very slick, almost oily. (I used fine grit sandpaper and manually rubbed it to lose the slipperiness.) GRIP: Handle size is small. My palm is just slightly over 3 1/4" across. For food cuts -the pommel rests in the middle of my palm and my index finger lays on spine with my fingers wrapped around the tail/pommel area. For shaving a stick, four finger grip with index finger near/on metal collar and pinky finger just inside the pommel. Function: food - good, paracord - okay, stick shaving - takes some effort. Not bad. Sheath works, thinner leather.

Cons: None
Beautiful knife
This is my third Marttiini knife. They are all of excellent quality and finished beautifully. This one arrived much more quickly than stated. The handle is made of a piece of Birch that is almost all burl, with a very nice finish. The blade is extremely sharp and also very shiny. I’m sure this will be a great all around knife for everything from hunting to camping and the kitchen.
