Randall's Adventure Training has been designing, marketing, and selling survival and military-style knives since their first survival courses in the Amazon Jungle of Peru. One of their first designs was the RTAK which was built by Newt Livesay's Wicked Knife Company before Ontario Knife Company produced the design. ESEE also produced and sold the RAT skinning/survival knife made by John Greco and the RAT Laser Strike knife made by TOPS (ESEE has since re-introduced the Laser Strike as an ESEE knife). Randall's Adventure Training also designed the following knives for Ontario Knife Company: RTAK II, TAK, RAT-7, RAT-5, RAT-3, Model 1 folder and the Model 2 folder.
The Ontario RAT Model 1 from Randall's Adventure Training is a folding EDC knife that can withstand hard use and abuse associated with tactical or survival tasks. For the money, there might not be a better knife on that market that can match the performance of the RAT Model 1. It features an ergonomic handle with smooth action and rock-solid lockup. The four-position pocket clip allows the user to customize their carry method to their liking. We absolutely love the off-set blade from the handle, which creates a unique look we rarely see in a knife and distinguishes it from all the rest. Whether you need to add a new knife to your EDC rotation (or you think it would make a great fit for a survivalist, serviceman or woman, or a true friend), rest assured you're making the right choice when you go with an Ontario RAT Model 1. This RAT 1 features a tough blade made from D2, an air hardened tool steel with high wear and abrasion resistant properties.

Great Value knife with a couple of minor flaws.
In General this is a great EDC knife. It comes fairly well sharpened,. I did hone it a bit to get a razor sharp edge. The weight is perfect I prefer a bit of heft in my knives as I am a big guy. With a bit of blue lube on either side of the pivot washers the blade opens very nicely with just a flick of the the thumb. I must say I was impressed to find both brass and super thin Teflon washers at the pivot point. Nice steel great attention to detail. There are two minor cons on this knife for me. The first is the linerlock release. It needs a redesign with two or three more millimeters on top to allow for easier closing for someone with large hands, this is the only thing holding me back from buying a second in AUS 8. Secondly the surface of the scales needs to be a bit rougher for a better grip. I am in process of making a custom set in G!0. Personally I would like to see a spacer along the spine of the handle but that is just personal preferenceAll in all I would recommend the Rat1 D2 to a friend.
