Opinel Knives

The Opinel N08 is the most popular and versatile size in the ever-growing line of Opinel folding knives. This knife is small enough to be used as a pocket knife and its 3.28" blade is capable for most all of your cutting needs. Stabilized beechwood is ultra-resistant and comfortably contoured to fit the hand. The blade is made from X90 Carbon steel, with a high carbon content, which is what makes it possible to achieve excellent hardness after heat treatment, guaranteeing the strength of the cutting edge, resistance to wear, and easy of sharpening. The hardness obtained after heat treatment are theoretically slightly greater in steels that do not contain chrome. The cutting strength is, therefore, better with a carbon steel knife and sharpening is much easier than stainless steel blades which contain chrome. However, carbon has a low resistance to corrosion caused by moisture, which means that certain precautionary measures are necessary when using and storing carbon knives: it's recommended that you avoid damp environments and that you dry the blade after each use.

Safety

This knife features the Virobloc Safety ring. The Virobloc safety ring was invented and implemented in 1955. This simple yet effective locking system greatly improved the original knife.The ability to help prevent the blade from opening when closed was added to the Virobloc in 2000.

I like it

This knife has found its way into the knives I carry at work, despite being 2 hand open/close only there’s something about this knife I REALLY like. The blade is fairly thin which turns it into a real slicer. A downside is that mine came with a good bit of friction to pull the blade out, but it feels like it’s starting to wear in more. I think the wood handles take in a little bit of humidity and cause more friction. Overall I enjoy pulling this knife out of my pocket and using it.

Exactly What I Expected

I wanted a folding knife for cooking; sometimes I cook at friend's houses and they don't always have sharp knives. I like the wood handle. It looks good and it feels comfortable. Folding and opening are not smooth like a high end of knife. The lock ring is a little hard to rotate.The blade itself came reasonably sharp, but it had a big burr on it. It was easy to remove and further sharpen. None of these problems are a deal killer. For the money, I think the quality is high. I am now open to buying more Opinel for cooking and/or for my knife collection.

Opinel #08

The Opinel #08 is the Classic. Very unique knife that carries as light as a feather. It is at home in the workshop or an evening out as a “Gentleman’s” Folder. Although it is NOT a heavy duty pocket knife the Opinel EXCELS at slicing and cutting anything light duty. It especially excels at kitchen tasks, such as slicing fruits and vegetables. HIGHLY recommend this knife.
