SNSF5BK: Spartan Harsey Folding Knife, Black PVD

Spartan Blades

The Spartan SHF is a collaboration between Spartan Knives and world-famous knife designer Bill Harsey. It is made to be used as an everyday carry, tactical, or for field use. They feature a 3.95" CPM-MagnaCut stainless steel blade and except for the blade, barrel pivot, and stop pin, all the parts on the knife are titanium. The ergonomic handle features finger grooves and jimping to lock the design into your hand during hard use. There is an internal over-travel prevention mechanism built into the handle and the titanium pocket clip is reversible for ambidextrous tip-up carry. The dual thumb studs are extremely easy to access because Spartan has milled a perfect ramp for your thumb to find these studs. It's a well-thought-out design and is manufactured with Spartan quality so you know you're getting a knife that can and will serve you well in any theater of use.

Cons: None
Almost returned, after 1 year I'm so glad I didn't
The knife wasn't sharp out of the box and didn't cut well at all. I debated on returning it. and instead I took a leap of faith and put a 17 degree edge on it. It isn't great at breaking down cardboard boxes, but it's fantastic at everything else. I've done food prep, yard work and for the size, it actually fits in you pockets well. I have many Demkos (AD20S both 20CV and Magnacut factory edges) and a Hinderer XM-24 but unlike them at a 17 degree angle, I haven't had any blade rolling or chipping. The heat treatment seems to be top notch and it stayed sharp longer than I anticipated. Also the grip is fits my 2XL glove hands perfectly and securely. It's constantly in my rotation and the only tiny almost insignificant grip I have is the PVD coating seems to create a little extra friction. For the money and a 4 inch blade, this is a BARGAIN! It's definitely Spartan as it is bare bones, doesn't have a fancy lock or run on bearings, but if I needed to rely on one folder to survive with, this might be the one.

Not happy at first
Right out of the box it was hard to open. And sounded like sand was in it. I put some Chris Reeves oil I got with there knives and had to work it in and finally got it to open like it should. The knife is one of the sharpest I have ever had out of the box. No play in the blade. It’s a little heavy for a EDC but it’s bad ass over all. If it worked like it does now out of the box I would have given it 5 stairs.
