SOGSJ32: SJ-32 SlimJim - Black

SOG

Our technical assisted folding knife line, stands out by virtue of simplicity and minimalism. It doesn't try to be the biggest or the loudest in the crowd. It is unobtrusive but always there when you need it. Constructed from a single piece of steel, SlimJim is just that, the slimmest assisted knife in the world. Start to open the blade, and let SOG Assisted Technology (S.A.T.) finish the action with a bang, using one of the surest assisted technologies out there. Tactile bumps and cutouts aid in control while all features are purposeful and functional. The patent-pending safety is used to insure the retention of the blade in the handle as well as acts as a double lock in the open position. The stealth carry clip is reversible. SlimJim, don't let its size fool you!

Had a little 'incident' at Heathrow with this slim puppy
I've had this for a few months. I liked the idea of an assisted opening extremely thin knife for keeping on hand, even when wearing a suit. Who needs a fancy pen in your coat pocket when you can have this little guy?I agree with the other reviews that the safety knob tends to go towards the lock position when you have it in your pocket, so when you take it out to open with one hand it will be locked and you always need to check before opening. The other thing is, it's so slim that opening isn't as smooth as it would be with a full grip knife and, after a a little use, it seems to need a little oiling to keep the opening mechanism smooth and not stop the assisted opening feature.Oh, and the other thing... don't try to take this through London Hearthow airport. I made the mistake of changing my mind about taking my roller bag as carry on instead of checking it in one time and the security scanner picked it up right away. He knew it was a folding knife and the approximate size right away... they called the cops and had me step aside and explain to them why I had a locking blade knife with me... in a suit bag! Having a locking blade knife in public in the UK is illegal... I was facing a stiff fine, confiscation of the knife and possibly spending the day at the police station. I told them it was an honest mistake and I was just traveling back home... they were nice enough to come up with a workable solution... No fine since I wasn't staying the UK and no confiscation... but they had to see me mail the knife back to my US address... they even walked me over the the post office in the airport and helped me with the correct stamps...

bad detailing on an innovative design
I bought this knife for everyday carry because of its slim profile. Unfortunately, some of the details of the design make it unsuitable for me. My biggest complaint is the safety catch. If carrying the knife clipped to your clothing, drawing the knife will always snag the safety and pull it up under the lock release so that you cannot open the knife. I am considering removing the safety, but that is also a bit of a problem because the lock release is on the back spine of the handle where it could be depressed in your grip unless the safety is slid forward after the blade is open. Without the safety issue, the thumb studs also snag your clothing making the knife difficult to drawn. I am relegating this to a backup knife for a pack pocket. Very innovative design, but not practical. I am using the bulkier SOG Flashback Mini for my daily carry.
