In March of 2013, the Transportation Security Administration announced a plan to one again allow knives on airplanes with a litany of restrictions. Although the plan was withdrawn before anyone even could blink, Spyderco was ready for it with a unique new non-locking folder called the Roadie. In essence a high evolved and specialized pen knife, the Roadie's full-flat ground sheepsfoot style blade features a new Double Dent for fingernail-free, easy two-hand opening. An improved notched-joint mechanism holds the blade open during use and is backed by a subtle index finger choil to prevent accidental closure. Contoured fiberglass-reinforced nylon scales and well executed runs of jimping on the choil and spine enable this knife to perform well beyond its size. This unique knife is a great choice for localities with highly restrictive knife laws.
I bought this knife because I wanted a small in-pocket EDC, and was intrigued by the design philosophy and appearance. (I really like the way sheep's foot blades look.) The knife is very high quality for the price. It opens and closes with a two-step feel: there is a detent halfway through the process. I particularly appreciate this when closing, as the spring is stiff and I'd otherwise worry about cutting the hand holding the handle. (The spring is so stiff that you HAVE to hold the handle with a grip that puts your fingers in harm's way. Of course, it's that same stiff spring that ensures the blade stays in the open position!)
First, let me admit that I am a big fan of sheepsfoot blades for their all around utility. I find that I use the sheepsfoot on my 3-blade stockmans more often than the other 2 blades combined. This handy little knife with it's good handle erganomics is the equivalent cutter of the sheepsfoot blade on a considerably larger-handled medium stockman. Very handy on a keychain or when wering dress slacks, and a great compliment to a larger lock blade for folks like me who carry more than one knife.
