The perfect cutting companion for city dwellers, the Urban Lightweight is the latest evolution of the original Urban. As a member of the SLIPIT family, it provides the advantages of clip carry and one-hand opening, but with a socially friendly non-locking mechanism. Its leaf-shaped blade is full-flat ground from Bohler M398 stainless steel for outstanding edge geometry and features an index-finger choil to help prevent unintentional closure during use. True to its name, the Urban Lightweight features a textured, fiberglass-reinforced-nylon handle that keeps it feather light while still providing a full, secure grip. A reversible, deep-pocket wire clip completes the package, offering convenient tip-up carry on both sides of the body. The knife does not lock for legality concerns yet still has a strong half stop mechanism to safely close the blade.
Is what I wanted. Great design. too hard to close or else, hence the 4
Love the design. Nice size. Steel seems really good and steel nerds seem to think it's a solid, high carbon, hard, high edge retention stainless. Wanted a slipjoint and this is a good version of that. PROS- great blade geometry- steel is very good for price - like the handle. Not overly textured so will not wear out pocket taking it out. - slipjoint design on this is very smart. It's is very strong non-locked open. I mean, this is not going to close easily on your hand. (See cons.) - very sturdy construction. This is going to hold up well I think CONS- I mentioned it is not going to close easily on your hand. Well, that's because it's just not going to close easily at all. They clearly did this by design but it's too hard to close. Especially the second notch, half way closed. It takes too much force to close it once hard way closed. If I cut myself with this knife, it will be that last half step closing it. This is a safety feature but it's overdone in my view. - worst edge out of the box I ever had from Spyderco. Lousy edge. Took it right to my WorkSharp Elite with edge grinder. It's perfect now. Would buy again. Will use this knife. Main issue is wishing the close did not take as much force as it does. The early iterations of non locking Spydercos closed way too easily. I think they went too far the other way, here. But I do like this knife.
Love this entire Caly design family (Caly, UKPK and the Urban). lt weighs nothing, has a slightly thicker spine than the UKPK - the cutting edger is just as thin. The steel is N690Co. Bohler tweaked the recipe for Takefu's VG-10. Very similar to VG-10 in use but l'd say it does everything a tad better. Holds the edge for a long time, takes an sharpness and behaves more like a carbon tool steel in that it rolls it's edge rather than chips. Very good edge stability and very high corrosion resistance. The Italians are very experienced with working and heat treating N690Co. Win win.Ergos are great. Classic refines lines.
