Spyderco

"We want variety!" It's an often heard sentiment from knife customers and is why Spyderco offers several bestsellers with different handle options. Knife nuts wanting the lightest-weight folders available, gravitate to FRN or fiberglass reinforced nylon handles. Ultra-light FRN is warp resistant, shuns chemicals, and isn't affected by temperature extremes. Spyderco's non-locking, one-hand open, clip carry folders are called SLIPITS.

Starting in 2004, Spyderco launched a folding knife model called the UK Penknife, targeted for carry in the United Kingdom where newly imposed legal restrictions forbade folding knives with locking blades.

As the SLIPIT concept gains momentum Spyderco keeps expanding the line with folders in varying sizes, steels and handles. Newly added are Lightweight SLIPITS. Lightweight UK Penknife blades are held open by a notched-joint at the knife's pivot. When closing the blade, the notch produces resistance functionally similar to traditional slip-joint penknives. Heightening control and comfort, Spyderco designers added a deep finger choil positioning the index finger on the bottom of the blade directly under the thumb. This lets you choke up near the cutting edge with comfort and dexterity. A tension-wire clip carries the folder deeply in a pocket, tip-up and ambidextrously.

Best in class
I recently moved to the UK, so I needed a non-locking knife. However, I wanted one-hand opening, so that rules out every traditional nail nick slipjoint. The UKPK is light as a feather and disappears in the pocket, but I still get a full four-finger grip and a half-stop detent for closing safely. Besides, the flat ground leaf blade slices like a kitchen knife, with distal taper for a tip like a needle. Nothing else offers this combination of features. I say it's all pro, no con, especially for the price.

Quality workmanship at a budget price
This knife was everything you would expect from Spyderco. The fitting , finish, and materials were top quality. My main concern was that since this knife has no blade lock that this could be a problem. I am glad to report that the two blade detents are very solid and require good pressure to move past them. Also I am very happy with this knife.

Spyderco Got it Right
I got this for traveling abroad due to certain laws prohibiting locking knives. It is beautifully designed and made. Lightweight but sturdy, very easy to open with the oversized thumb hole and the handle is comfortable with a good shape and gripping surface. Another nice touch is that the mount for the clip is two discreet grooves that don't spoil the feel or aesthetics of the handle. I am not a pocket clip fan, so removing wasn't a big deal as with some other brands. Lack of a lock isn't an issue at all, the SLIPIT features secures the blade unless you do something really stupid like putting pressure on the back of the blade while you are using it. If you grip it correctly with the finger choil, you can't close it on yourself. The blade is scary sharp out of the box and the perfect size for an everyday knife. While I did buy it for travel, I find myself putting it in my pocket more often than not for everyday use here in the States. For the price, you can't beat the quality, design, and function.
