The Manbug is a uniquely practical folder designed by Spyderco's founder, Sal Glesser. As the founder of the company, Glesser has, through the years, carried virtually every knife Spyderco produced, as well as many prototypes and special models that never went into production. Despite the wide array of knives available to him, the one he carries most often is the Spyderco LadyBug—a small, go-anywhere clipless folder that rides in the pocket. Anyone who has ever used a LadyBug knows that it cuts with an authority far beyond its size. However, as part of Spyderco's quest for C.Q.I. (Constant Quality Improvement), Glesser decided to make it even better. And, for anyone whose male ego made it difficult for them to carry a "LadyBug," he also made life easier. The result is the ManBug—an amazingly handy cutting tool that is more at home in larger hands while still sitting inconspicuously in a pocket or even on a keychain.
KnifeCenter Initial Impressions
This is a small knife- though not as small as the Ladybug. It is still a tool for a small task. The flat grind is a good feature as is the quality blade steel. The handle is light and the whole thing is really a lightweight, small task item. It is not meant as a daily chore kind of knife. Use as a backup.
Zytel Handles
A nylon polymer that is lightweight and extremely durable, Zytel can be shaped and textured to provide excellent grip.
VG10 Stainless Steel
A time-tested stainless steel made in Japan by Takefu and one of the most popular choices for performance kitchen knives.
Lockback
The lockback system has been used for many decades. It can usually be found on the knife spine and it provides a strong lockup that will wear well.
Made in Japan
The exotic steel Capital of the World, Japan produces and innovates some of the best products, from pocket to kitchen knives and everything in between.
This is well made and a solid little knife. It's enough larger than the LadyBug to be easier to use for me. And I really like that it's flat ground and this shape of a blade. I am also, and always have been, very happy with what Spyderco does with VG-10. I know it's no longer considered a premium steel but Spydercos work with it and heat that makes for a great combination of very sharp, easy to sharpen, with high corrosion resistance and acceptable wear resistance.
As far as an everyday pocket carry, this knife is amongst the smallest I own. And to be honest I never used to consider carrying anything smaller than the dragonfly. And would regularly carry the delica for years. But now I have a new job that frowns on knives, so I decided to go small for discretion sake. I have very large hands, so one hand opening was a challenge. This was easily remedied by making a paracord lanyard that allowed me to get a full grip, allowing me full gain of the utility of this little knife. It’s serves itself very well, excelling in all small tasks like cutting string or other cordages. Letter opener, or even fruit peeling and cutting. Overall a very good pocket friend, it’s so light you don’t notice it’s there. Also take up very little room in the pocket.
I use this knife in a daily basis very versatile I have it always in a keychain very handy, sharp and manageable, quality is excellent, size is right on! Love it!
