WEK18046D3: WE18046D-3 Jim O'Young Synergy 2v2 Integral Folding Knife - Black Titanium

WE Knife Company

The Synergy was designed by retired mechanical design engineer turned competitive shooter Jim O'Young. Jim leveraged his knowledge and experience to design and engineer the SpeedTech Synergy folding knife using SolidWorks, a state-of-the-art, 3-dimensional, solid modeling CAD software tool. It was the very first knife created using this technology and featured several design elements never seen before in a production folding knife: an ergonomic, fully 3D digitally sculpt surface handle machined from a single, solid billet of material, a captive floating bearing system, and a button lock with increased engagement geometry. The Synergy was truly way ahead of its time and was awarded the Most Innovative American Design at the 1999 BLADE Show by its industry peers. On the 20th anniversary of the original Synergy design, Jim partnered with WE Knife to continue the legacy and introduce an updated and re-engineered Synergy 2 to the next generation of cutlery enthusiasts. Now, the Synergy 2v2 is here with the same great feel yet a completely different look.

Rare WE Excellence
I got mine on sale ($220) in 2023, but I doubt I'd be any less impressed had I paid the current full price. Especially with what ~$350 gets you from WE and comparable manufacturers in 2026. Great grind for EDC use. Reasonably thin stock with a deep hollow. Mine is currently 15dps, .010" BTE at the heel, gradually transitioning to .015" at the tip. My only real complaint, if forced to find one, is the lockbar tension. It feels weird and spongy but tuning integrals requires a human with actual skill and gets expensive so as long as your expectations are realistic then I can't imagine being disappointed. The factory edge was standard overbuffed, 25dps WE trash. I put no weight in factory edges, but I know some people do (not that there's anything wrong with that). Edge retention has been great, but I suspect the geometry is doing the heavy lifting. The blade coating has held up surprisingly well. I've used it a ton and the only real wear is where the hollow meets the flat.
