Designed by Azo, the Kizer Drop Bear introduced Kizer's adjustable Clutch Lock mechanism to deliver ambidextrous crossbar lock performance in a compact everyday carry package. The series has since grown to offer a wide variety of blade steels, handle materials, and lock configurations.
What is Kizer's Clutch Lock and how does it work?
Kizer's Clutch Lock is an ambidextrous crossbar lock mechanism featuring internal adjustment holes for fine-tuning spring tension. Five distinct spring mounting positions on each side allow you to adjust the lock bar stiffness to your personal preference. Paired with ball bearings in the pivot, it provides exceptionally smooth deployment and a secure lockup.
What blade steels and handle options are available on the Kizer Drop Bear?
The Drop Bear series spans a wide spectrum of configurations, from budget-friendly Vanguard editions in Nitro-V or 154CM to premium versions in CPM-20CV, Elmax, LC200N, and CPM-S45VN. Handle options are equally diverse, including textured aluminum, micarta, G10, Ultem, and marbled FatCarbon. Is the Kizer Drop Bear ambidextrous?
Yes, the folding Drop Bear is fully ambidextrous right out of the box. The Clutch Lock bar passes entirely through the frame, allowing effortless one-handed operation from either side, and the dual thumb studs operate identically with either hand. The deep-carry pocket clip is also reversible for left- or right-side tip-up carry.
How does the Kizer Drop Bear compare to other lightweight crossbar folders?
Compared to ultra-minimalist crossbar folders, the Drop Bear offers a sturdier, more rigid feel in hand thanks to full liners and solid handle materials like aluminum or micarta. It also uses smooth ball bearings in the pivot instead of traditional phosphor bronze washers, resulting in an effortless drop-shut action. This provides the convenience of a compact three-inch blade with impressive hand stability.
How do you adjust the spring tension on a Kizer Clutch Lock?
You adjust spring tension by disassembling the handle scales to access the internal liners and moving the Omega springs to a different mounting hole. Kizer machines five different pin locations on the liner plates, allowing you to increase or decrease resistance depending on whether you prefer a softer flick or a stiffer lock bar feel.
