For this review, I have a Buck 110 nd a Buck 501. Two Knives I will always treasure and to me they are priceless Now I have a Buck 346 and whenever I leave the house, it's in my right hip pocket and cocked hard to the right. It's refined to the point of near perfection when used as a all-round utility pocket knife. The blade is sharp and stable in the open position.and locked. The Rosewood Dymondwood handles are a superb addition to this Exemplary Tool. If I can't find anyone to pass it on to when I die, I will take it to my grave - just in case...
For eleven years I carried and used a Buck 345 Vantage Select. It had centering issues but it was a $30 knife and easily fixed with Loctite. But the knife was comfortable. The high running flat ground blade in 420HC performed well and cut great. Now we get to the 346 which I was gifted for Christmas to replace my 345. It was a nice thought, but I'm appalled that this knife set a family member back $80.No blade centering issues now- I guess if you get Avid quality Buck will bother to put Loctite on the pivot screw. It doesn't flip open any better and uses the same smaller bronze washers of 345. Strangely though all the handle screws stick out through the liners exposed to the blade and are roughly cut. My old 345 had the handle screws cut flush to the liners. If my 346 were to go off-center the blade grind would be deeply scratched from these screws. The resin inserts in the FRN handle scales feel a little thicker in grip but both inserts aren't even matching shades of color. Dymalux/Dymondwood is mostly weather resistant resin with thin sheets of wood in it for appearance purposes and not true wood. An actual handle scale made from rosewood and soaked in resin would classify as real wood. Now I like Buck's 420HC as a blade steel, but no folder is worth $80 in this steel grade. In short this knife just leaves a lot to be desired at the cost if you've owned the 345 Vantage Select.
