MAM2043: 2043 Sheepsfoot Pocket Knife with Leather Lanyard

MAM Filmam

Established in 1870, the Filmam Manufactory in Palaculo, Portugal, has excelled in manufacturing variations of essential tools, while offering an outstanding price-performance ratio. The simple design developed for agricultural work, has evolved over many generations in function and form. The stainless steel used in these tools come from Germany and is specially treated using a traditional method of high quality temper with more than 56 degrees of hardness. This impressive satin finished steel has molybdenum vanadium silicium and carbon. With the right precision, these components make the stainless steel very durable, rust resistant, flexible and easy to use. The handles are crafted from a fine French beechwood, and are treated with a special polish that provides added resistance and durability. The nature of beechwood, very light yet very strong, makes it a popular choice for pocket knives and provides a smooth and comfortable grip.

Know What You’re Getting
I initially bought this knife for general use pocket carry because I liked the sheepsfoot blade. However, this knife really is just not robust enough for that. The liner lock is also the reverse of every other knife I’ve had, making it awkward to use as a right hander. However, the blade is absolutely razor sharp, probably comparable to a straight razor. I cannot remember if it came that sharp, but I believe it did, and I know I have maintained the edge with nothing but a coarse leather strop with a good bit of compound on it. I now use this knife for leather working, which it is well suited to. The profile of the blade is extremely thin as well, so it causes very little resistance while cutting. This is absolutely not a heavy, or even a medium use knife, but if you need a screaming sharp blade that is easy to maintain, and on a knife that can lock and fold, for some specific cutting task, I think you’ll be pleased, especially for the price. I would caution against using it extensively even on wood, but anything soft, like fabric or plant material, will be perfect for this knife. Just make sure you know what you’re getting, because if you’re expecting something like a standard liner locking pocket knife, you will be disappointed.

Seems like a pretty solid value
Who knows how the steel will hold up on this inexpensive knife, but mine arrived shaving-sharp out of the box. The beechwood handle feels really nice, is attractive and makes the thing incredibly lightweight, and the leather thong is very handy for retrieving it from a pocket. A two-hand opener - even a NYPD officer with an attitude would have difficulty opening this with centrifugal force. Metalwork seems solid - way more quality than I'd expect for the price. I like how the "liner" lock (even though the knife has no liners, that's how the lock works) is lefty-friendly, operating from the opposite direction one usually sees. It was noted that shipping would take a few days, but it got here fast as lightning. Honestly, I bought the thing because the brand intrigued me: I read a review comparing it to Opinel, which I consider to be one of the screaming values (the carbone series) in the knife world. I'd not heard of MAM Filmam before Knife Center's email the other day, and I'm glad I took a chance - I can see buying more of these in the future. I'm glad I took a chance on it - and I'm grateful to Knife Center for always stretching out and offering us stuff that's different.
