BU0656GRS: 656 Large Pursuit Fixed, Drop Point

Buck Knives

A multi-purpose alternative to traditional hunting knives, the Pursuit Series fills the need for a mid-range hunting knife designed to be suitable for beginners and the experienced, serious hunter. These USA made knives are available with standard or guthook variants. Added detail was put into the design, creating a comfortable, non-slip profile and a full-tang, dependable blade. Designed for excellent performance, the Pursuit Series line is the perfect field option.

Drop Point

This blade is full bellied with a strong, thick point for heavier tasks. It can also be used as a general work knife. The top of the blade drops down toward the tip, which minimizes accidental puncturing while skinning. The drop point blade is strong and very versatile.

The steel behind the blades

Buck is a market leader in edge retention thanks to their steel selections and heat treat process pioneered by Paul Bos, whose heat treating system has proven to the best in the business. Each blade is put through a rigorous heat treat process and quality performance test then is tempered to the appropriate Rockwell Hardness through a heating, freezing and reheating system. This process, along with attention to detail through grinding and hand edging, is the foundation of Buck's Edge2X technology. This gives you longer edge life, ease of resharpening and a blade that will not fail you.

420HC

420HC is Buck's standard steel with great edge retention and corrosion resistance. This industry standard is easily resharpened. For best performance, Buck hardens to a standard Rc 58-60.

Pros: Weight, Overall Quality, Blade Material, Finish, Blade Sharpness
Cons: Handle Material
Ergonomic Issues
Purpose: backpack knife. I am not a hunter.I am a female with small - medium sized hands. (Not “slightly larger than average” like DCA)Things I like: Buck’s 420 HC steel, size, blade shape, full tang, moderate price, made in USA.Con.s: the handle. Not particularly comfortable for bare hands. The middle finger choil needs to be deeper and wider with a more rounded transition to the ring finger area. Index finger choil is fine. The thumb jimping could be eliminated. Would prefer for the spine to be exposed rather than covered by the green over-molding in the thumb area. (I like to stretch my thumb out on a flat, smooth spine.)I think Buck tried too hard when designing this handle. A more generic, neutral handle would make this better for hiking. (This knife may be designed specifically for hunters, not hikers.)

685 hunting knife
This "600" series, I will call it, is an amazing product. I just bought the 685. Synthetic handles provide a superbgrip on a 4" full tang blade. Excellent sheath. Made in the US. An incredible value. I have 2 and will buy more. Anyone who wants a serious and economical multi-purpose knife should order this. If you have never had Buck, this is the place to begin. I have always bought folders and have a relatively expensive and niceBuck hunting knife but this is a new level in value.
