CR2920: 2920 Goken, Designed by James Williams

CRKT

Grace of a falcon, grit of a warrior.

James Williams is one of the most revered martial artists in America. He brings that discipline and unrivaled know-how to this sleek tactical knife. To round out its powerful capability, it's privy to Field Strip technology and won't slow down even in the grittiest conditions. This is what happens when a master takes to making.

Most famous for his "System of Strategy," James Williams of Encinitas, California is one who seriously knows his way around a tactical folding knife. Elegance and effectiveness are paramount in Japanese culture both when it comes to martial arts and classic weaponry. James' expertise bridges the gap between the two and has inspired incredibly famous designs like the Hissatsu and the Otanashi Noh Ken.

The Goken is aptly named—the Japanese word is reserved for only those that embody fortitude. This knife is a worthy addition to his tactical folding knife lineup with a classic James Williams modified Tanto blade style finished with a deep black powder coat. The 3.693" blade is deployed from its tough G10 handles with an inconspicuous flipper and held fast with a locking liner amid any dirty job it may confront.

As the first of Williams' knives that's been given Field Strip Technology, the Goken is designed to come apart in the field with no tools for cleaning and simple maintenance... because what's an everyday carry that doubles as a self-defense tool that can't keep up in the face of grimy adversity?

The breakthrough "Field Strip" innovation comes from the shop of world-renowned knife craftsman Ken Onion and has been over ten years in the making. To disassemble the Goken when the knife is in the closed position, push the front release lever away from the blade, then spin the turn release wheel on the rear of the handle away from the pivot shaft—once you feel the handle release, pull it up and away from the blade. Reassembly is as easy as reversing the procedure, allowing for practical, quick maintenance where you stand. Because a samurai sword won't fit in your pocket, the Goken will stand in its place.

Cons: Lock Type, Ease of Opening
fix my last review
probably the best blade shape for penetration and slashing, the blade is right. very sharp. the handle is large and very hand filling,(a good thing imo) so if smallest size is necessary that's a problem. my biggest gripe was that the flipper had NO texturing on the outside, where finger comes in contact., at first that bothered me. crkt needs to take this blade and "envelope" and put an assist in it then keep all else as is (texture the damn flipper!), that would be a great knife. back to carrying this after assessing needs and going thru my "collection"

A Disappointment
lack of attention to detail on a knife at this price is hard to forgive. Still carrying it but now actively looking for another defensive edc.
