CRKUMNUM: Umnumzaan

Chris Reeve Knives

In every sense of the definition, the Umnumzaan is a knife deserving respect. Developed from the multi-decade heritage of the Sebenza, this bold, innovative folding knife is one to be reckoned with for its inventive design features and ability to get the job done.

Chris Reeve had the working hand in mind with the tough build of the Umnumzaan, or Boss in Zulu. The Umnumzaan was the first introduction of the Ceramic Ball-End Integral Lock mechanism. Sturdy and overbuilt, the Umnumzaan brings the strength of a fixed blade straight to your pocket. With a sandblasted crosshatched grip and a wide lock bar, the Umnumzaan is meant for a non-slip grip and action for a large or gloved hand.

Typical of Chris Reeve Knives, the pivot strength is more robust than other folders. The large pivot screw and pin are supported by large thrust washers. These perforated phosphor bronze washers are designed to reduce friction and to retain the fluorinated grease for longer lubrication thereby extending the life of the knife.

Ceramic Ball - The Integral Lock's Upgraded Interface

A ceramic ball creates the interface between the blade locking surface and the integral locking arm surface. The ball doubles to drop into a detent on the blade to ensure the blade does not open accidentally.

The thumb lug doubles as the stop pin, ensuring a solid lockup. Around the lug is a polyurethane o-ring that acts as a shock absorber to cushion the impact of the lug against the handle. Never wishing to copy other designs without giving credit, Grant and Gavin Hawk originated the shock absorber concept in one of their many innovative designs. Chris Reeve Knives appreciates their consent for Chris to use this adaptation of their concept.

An absolutely amazing Chris Reeve must own/try
Having looked for an Umnumzaan for a while now, I couldn't be more happy finding one at knife center. Placed my order and it came in within 2 days. The knife will come in a bit stiff, and what they say is true about the opening is true. Depending on how old your knife is (it will come with a birthday card) you may want to dissemble and use the grease to slick it up. All I did with mine was loosen the pivot a touch and it works amazingly. Overall the quality is outstanding and I couldn't be happier. Will gladly shop here again.

Best knife I've owned
I see why there is all the hype. This thing is somehow both chunky and thin. It's easy to pocket, but built like a tank. That smooth & hydraulic action is great. After it broke in its butter smooth. Amazing all around.

Buy once, cry once
A lot of knife makers are using China to produce their designs, and they are top notch. But, try selling it a year after - they hold very little value. Reeve knives will always, always hold their value, even a decade later. I bought heaps of good quality Chinese knives but the Umnumzaan is just one of those knives you have to have in your collection.I own two Umnumzaan knives and the quality surpasses all the knives I own. They aren’t meant to be fidget toys, this is a tool built like a tank.
