KS1920: 1920 Select Fire

Kershaw Knives

Most multi-tools include a plethora of "tools," many of which are not actually very useful. Even worse, in many of these tools, the important knife blade is an afterthought--and barely useful at all. Not the Select Fire.

The Select Fire was built to be a knife-focused multi-tool. It's built around a knife blade, a knife blade that works and works well. For strength and edge-holding capability, the Select Fire's blade is made of 8Cr13MoV stainless steel and bead-blasted for an easy care, matte look. What's more, the Select Fire offers a surprisingly comfortable grip, so it's actually easy to hold as you use that big, useful blade--something most multi-tools can't say.

Designed by Grant & Gavin Hawk, the Select Fire is also a handy multi-tool. There's a 4-piece bit set, plus the bit driver. The bits, two flathead and two crosshead, are in on-board carriers that swings out to let you choose your bit, then swings back to snap into place. Black liners give it a sleek, finished look. The contoured glass-filled nylon handle is equally comfortable whether you're using the blade or the bits. The Select Fire makes a great addition to every tool and truck box. In fact, it's so handy you might want to get two.

Great concept, VERY poor execution. DO NOT RECOMMEND
I loved the concept of a pocket knife with a screwdriver. Most multi tools don't focus on the knife like this one does. Unfortunately the design was never tested and it filed miserably. The bit holder is merely pressed on to the shaft and has no mechanical attachment. The day after I put it into my pocket I found the holder tip had fallen off. There is no way to secure it short of a weld.Blade is a 5 of 5 and the rest of the tool is a huge failure. 1 star is the lowest I can rate it on this system.

Kershaw 1920 Select Fire
I wanted to switch up my EDC. I saw this and I liked the concept and reviews. My EDC can get used a lot and get pretty beat up.I like the weight, hefty but not too heavy. I REALLY wish the blade was partly serrated for even more multi-functions. Deploys slower than a flip-knife, which is good because a few times it only partly opened with the inner edge next to my thumb, but I’m sure that’ll get ironed out as I use it more.I had to modify one of the screwdriver bit holders. It did not sit flush to the handle. One side did but the other was raised quite a bit and caught on my pants when unclipping it. The parts that hold the bits are a type of black ABS (?) plastic so I did some carving /shaving / cutting where the hinge met the handle. Now it is flush on both sides.Perhaps that was just a quirk with the one shipped to me. The mold might’ve been slightly off.My other issue was the screwdriver. It doesn’t lock to the handle making it a solid unit. The springs that allow the bit holders to flip out and snap back are kinda small, but it’s a part that should last. If not I can take the handle apart and replace with a better gauge. However, The pivot for the bit holders has a lot of play. This is where the springs are located to snap it back in place. I’m sure the play is needed to make it move easily — but it might concern me if the knife gets submerged / dirty / muddy, etc.Still, this is a nice piece of kit and I’m happy to give it a spin as my new EDC.The blade itself is great and solid to the locked frame. Feels confident.A bottle opener is part of the handle — not sure why that feature is not listed on the product page.
