KS2340: 2340 AM-5 Folding Knife

Kershaw Knives

Timeless Al Mar Knives designs meet Kershaw's precision manufacturing and meticulous fit and finish to bring you updated versions of some of the most iconic Al Mar Knives.

The AM-5 is the largest of the AM series knives. Kershaw updated it with SpeedSafe assisted opening for quick and simple one-handed opening. Just pull back on the flipper. The blade is quality 8Cr13MoV stainless steel with a black-oxide coating for an extra measure of blade protection. The front handle scale is G10 — crowned and polished for a smooth feel and classy look. The back is pure steel with a sturdy frame lock to keep the blade in position until you release it. The AM-5 also features a deep-carry pocket clip with Al Mar Knives red logo emblem.

In addition to a dedication to the original designs, Kershaw kept two things in mind when creating these exciting Al Mar Knives: quality and value. Kershaw is using top-notch materials including top-of-the-line blade steel and real G10 scales. Plus, they're paying special attention to details. Yet they're keeping the prices down on these classic knives — which means these brilliant Al Mar Knives are now readily available to a new generation of knife enthusiasts.

Features

  • Flipper - The "flipper" is a protrusion on the back of the blade that the user can pull back on, or flip, in order to move the blade easily out of the handle.
  • SpeedSafe - Assists you to open any SpeedSafe knife quickly and easily with a manual push on the thumbstud or pull back on the flipper, built into many Kershaw best sellers.
  • Frame Lock - A portion of the handle (the knife frame) moves behind the blade to lock it into position during use. This is a safety feature of the knife.
  • Single Position - The pocket clip is in a fixed position on the knife handle; usually it is positioned for tip-down, right-handed carry, though this may vary.

Yes, it really is too hard to open
Really disappointed with this knife. I share the opinions of most of these reviews: Overall it’s a great design but none of that matters if it takes two hands to open. It feels like irony that an open-assist takes more effort to open than most flippers with no assist. I had hoped it would loosen over time but it didn’t. Other reviewers took theirs apart and made adjustments. Apparently you can improve the knife’s performance that way. I’ll pass and just get a better knife.

It Is Stiff, But Play With It
I too was put off at first thinking this knife was too hard to open. After playing with it for a while, loosening it up, I now love it! I did not take it apart, convert it to a fixed blade, I just opened it, a lot. If only it was not made in "China" I would give it 5 stars. I love the finger grooves, the handle material, and the sharp, sharp blade. That sexy little Al Mar logo doesn't hurt anything. I flip it open while driving, love how it fits into my hand. A person could put some hurt out with this small blade.

Pros: Weight, Pocket Clip
Cons: Lock Ease of Use
Listen to the bad reviews, yes; it's that bad
I bought this because of the clearance price -- thinking I could live with a stiffly opening knife. After all, I own several Cold Steel large folders that are somewhat stiff to open and close. It couldn't be that bad, right? Yes it can! This Kershaw is in the realm of unusable it is so stiff. I'm a healthy middle-aged male of average strength and while it's not impossible to open one-handed, you have to apply so much pressure to the flipper it is literally painful to your fingertip. I thought I could fix it by taking it apart and simply removing the assist spring and then I would have a non-assisted knife. That did not help -- the detent is still so stiff that it is still basically unusable. What I ended up doing to salvage at least some use from it: I disassembled the knife and removed the washers and pocket clip to use as spare parts for other knives and I jammed the frame/liner lock into the open position. Now I store it open like a fixed blade on a magnetic holder in my garage. It's a pity this knife is messed up in this manner because the feel of the knife in hand is excellent. I really like the handle design. For that, it gets two stars.
