LNM7S: M7S Satin Multi-Purpose Field Knife

LionSteel

M7 is the next LionSteel fixed blade knife to come through our doors and this tactical/camping fixed blade is a beast! LionSteel's goal was to build a good multi-purpose field knife. Therefore, they decided to use an old project developed a few years ago with Molletta - the Carthago was produced initially as a limited edition and with the necessary modifications they have recently put it into production. The 7.09" blade is an intimidating piece of steel when unsheathed and it really is a piece of edged art. The handle is extremely well done, locks the knife into your hand perfectly, and is very comfortable to use for an extended period of time. Knife comes with a friction fit Kydex sheath with a cordura backing.

Michele Pensato - aka ‘molletta’, his nickname in Italian – is a very active designer with years of experience. His previous life as an excursion lover and a passion for archaeology had him spending most of his experiences in the great outdoors, where he soon got to understand how a great knife should really be and what it should be capable of achieving. He led the Nexus production group and the group that was created at the MCKF Forum. A keen student of the steel industry, he stands out for his new approach to the use of materials and experimentation in thermal treatment applications.

An advanced user of design software such as Catià, Solidworks, Inventor, he applies FEA to design and aims to create yet more solid and innovative products.

Very pleasant surprise!
For several years I have compared knives of this size and similar design, from inexpensive models to a few costlier than the M7. Having had good experience with Sleipner steel I decided to give the M7 a try. As mentioned in another review, this knife would probably hold up to any use or abuse given, though I intend to use it only for such things as cleaning/skinning/cutting meat, woodcraft and other knife duties. Out of the box it had one of the best edges I have seen on a factory knife, nicely sharpened. I touched it up to my standards and went to work with it. The grip is amazingly comfortable and well formed and feels almost velvety. The weight and balance are superb. The steel is well treated and holds an edge remarkably well. I am not a fan of Kydex sheaths, but this sheath and attachment system are so well designed and well made I would not consider replacing it. The knife fits the sheath perfectly with no play or rattle. My only complaint is the difficulty removing the knife from the sheath, but that may have been caused by a cut on the pad of my thumb right in the spot that pushed against the sheath. I purchased my first general purpose knife in 1967, custom made. Since that time I have tried many knives of various steels and designs. When I first handled the M7 and felt the response of the steel as I touched it up, I realized this was likely the overall best knife I have ever used. Wish it had been available 50 years ago. I think the satin finish is better than a coated finish, unless there is a specific need for no reflection. This is my first Lionsteel knife, but it will not be the last. And it looks good!

What a pleasant surprise when it arrived!!!
What a pleasant surprised when I first put it in my hand! It's well balanced and lighter than I expected. The whole system is light. The handle has enough grip to catch enough...but smooth you could swing it all day without hot spots. You can even two finger the very end of the grip to get strong chops and completely swing it with confidence. This knife is great for chopping, cutting and with its choil and lightness you'll even feel comfortable dressing out a deer or elk.if I had one complaint....even though the system is light....I would of chosen thicker Kydex....but it's a small complaint. The knife looks pretty nice and the saber grind even looks strong. Great belly for handling game or large salmon type fish. I was in the Army as a Ranger and Long Range Surviellance Units and wish I would of had this knife when I was still active. I sharpened the knife to my specs like I do every time I get a new knife. Over the years and being the go-to-guy to sharpen every bodies knives you learn allot about knife's steel when you sharpen by hand with diamond sharpeners. You get a true insight into the knife company's steel quality. With that said....I would rate this knife steel pretty good with its tempering. I noticed that it also holds a pretty good edge with cutting. Like I said, I am pretty happy with this knife so far. You will be happy if you buy this knife. It's a higher grade knife at a medium price...you will be happy.
