Not just Private-proof. It's idiot proof.
First off, what I like most is that this system does not allow you to scratch up the flat of a blade. Not the most important thing to most, especially given that the dog had already chewed up the sheath of the D2 blade I tested this on.D2 is an exceptionally hard steel, and that's where the Lansky can definately improve by making the extra coarse stone about 1/8th of an inch wider. It'll stop the stone from rolling while cutting the bevel for the new edge. The only other issue is that the clamp attachment barely bites onto the spine of the blade. I had to grind away a bit of it and "patch" it with a bit of leather used to secure a flint in a flintlock. Now the clamp doesn't scratch the blade either, and it doesn't come loose on you when sharpening a blade while watching gun-porn.A major advantage of this system is that anyone can shapen any civilized length blade. What I mean is that everyone has his own stroke on a regular whetstone. I'm a lefty, so my knives get whetstone wear that reflects this. There is only one stroke that the Lansky allows, so it doesn't matter if my son decides to wear a soft sandstone in half to alter my lefty bevel, because Lansky laughs at such foolishness. The trickiest part in sharpening a blade is the tip. It's easy to round the point over time. I believe the point will be preserved far longer. No more clip point blades looking like a sheepsfoot after 20 years of wear.I have no idea how durable this is, but I see no reason to cast doubt, as the individual stones are available seperately. The weak spot is the clamp. The treads in the aluminum won't hold up forever, and should probably be made of steel.I'll sum it up by sayin' the Lansky is a da**

Cons: Ease of Use
Great stones, awful clamp design
The Lansky Knife Sharpening System is one of the most used because it simply works. That being said, the clamp is absolutely useless. A good teaching tool for those learning what angle works best for their knives use, but it about ends there. A 45 degree inclusive edge works best for my work and hard use knives which is simple to do without the clamp. Simply place the knife at 90 degrees, cut the angle in half to 45 degrees, and again to 22.5 degrees. From there using these factory stones you can get your knife at a hair popping working edge by hand.Again, great kit, cruddy clamp.

Superb tool.
I've had this Lansky system for well over 20 years now, wouldn't trade it for anything, especially with the addition of 3 of their diamond stones I purchased separately. I have only 2 minor complaints : I find it really tough to sharpen a tanto pattern blade, or a really large blade. But for 99% of my knives you can't beat it.
