This elite expression of the Manix 2 Lightweight combines its weight-saving advantages, full-service cutting power, and the strength of the Ball Bearing Lock mechanism with the enhanced edge retention and corrosion resistance of CPM-SPY27. After years of using the best materials the world's leading steel manufacturers could provide, Spyderco decided it was time to create their own. In close cooperation with Crucible Industries, they've developed CPM-SPY27 - a particle metallurgy stainless steel containing a proprietary mix of alloys, including vanadium, molybdenum, niobium, nitrogen, and cobalt. This remarkable composition, enhanced by the amplifying effects of cobalt and the state-of-the-art Crucible Particle Metallurgy process is produced exclusively for Spyderco and will be featured in select USA-made models. Every knife made with this steel will also have a distinctive cobalt-blue handle color that highlights its elite pedigree.
The leaf-shaped profile of the Manix 2's blade provides a long, gently curved cutting edge and a sturdy, utilitarian point. For maximum control, it features a forefinger choil and a thumb ramp with strategic jimping (textured grooves) that allow a forward-positioned grip during detailed cutting tasks. The 14mm Trademark Round Hole proudly announces the knife's Spyderco pedigree and makes one-handed deployment with either hand swift and positive.
The Manix 2 Lightweight's handle is injection molded from cobalt blue fiberglass reinforced copolymer (FRCP) and includes Spyderco's distinctive Bi-Directional Texturing pattern to ensure a secure grip in all environmental conditions. The lightweight FRCP handle reduced the overall weight of the knife to a mere 3 ounces--42 percent lighter than the G10 handled Manix 2. A reversible wire clip provides convenient left or right-side tip-up carry and an oversized lanyard hole allows the easy attachment of fobs and lanyards.
Linking the blade and handle is Spyderco's patented Ball Bearing Lock mechanism. This high-strength lock consists of a ball bearing nested within a durable textured polymer "cage." When the blade is opened, a compression spring drives the cage forward to wedge the ball bearing between a ramp on the blade tang and the steel frame anchored between the handle halves. Drawing the caged ball bearing to the rear releases the lock and allows the blade to close smoothly while keeping your fingers safely away from the sharp edge.

The best handle ergonomics, strong and comfortable. Strong ball bearing locking mechanism that is crisp and very satisfying to use. It’s nice that it can be disassembled if needed, since they don’t use rivets anymore. This is a strong hard working folding knife.
How Use: EDC general use. Package opening, shop work, etc.Greatness: Lightweight with adequate strength makes it a winner for EDC weight reduction, for hiking, etc.I am a knife user/collector of over 50yrs experience. The Manix design won me over from the start. I convex all my blade edges and the flat grinds really help with that along with cut-through performance. The gentle curve uses physics to improve cutting performance. It's just like the karate punch - the max force applied to the smallest area = great penetration. Plus the edge is longer than the blade length adding slicing performance. I love curvy blades and it doesn't have to be an extreme curve to add benefits. A gentle curve can do everything a straight edge can do, at least in my uses, and perform better to boot.It has a nice EDC tip, not a fieldcraft tip which needs to be more robust. But robust means also blunter, that is a tradeoff. The EDC tip is better with the sharper tip - in my use...- for example opening shoplifting resistant plastic packaging. Sharper tip means less force needed to puncture the plastic when you get home. That is a huge safety concern. Ideally you want to use a minimum of force when using a knife. More force means a greater chance for loss of control and greater damage potential.The two position grip, combined with that tip, gives this knife a wider range of uses because of the ability to choke up and control the tip. For power, say whittling a stick, the rear grip works well with the blade working nearer the pivot. I have XL wide hands with short fingers - typical meat hook hand - and a hand hard to fit. The Manix can fit a wide range of hands and feels great in mine. I have the fancy model with the jimping plates, the work-a-day model with a back lock and this lightweight model which to me is more Spyderco like. Love the lock on the lightweight for it's strength, the lock grips could use a little more angle on them, if nitpicking.I also find it a beautiful design for looks and love the teal grips.My first Spydie was a Delica that I used in my martial arts training and Spyderco has been my goto brand ever since. If someone asks me for a knife recommendation the Manix is my Spyderco goto.
