Description
TCTMARINER2VM: Bob Terzuola Mariner 2 Folding Knife - Vintage Micarta
Tactile Knife Co.
Originally designed in the 80s by the legendary Bob Terzuola as an everyday carry pocket knife, this heritage release combines a MagnaCut sheepsfoot blade with Vintage Micarta on the "show" side and Grade 5 titanium on the "lock" side for a lightweight, pocket-friendly design. Tactile preserved the original Mariner's aesthetic and spirit while adapting it to meet sub-3" knife laws. The updated model features a 3D-machined pocket clip adorned with Bob's signature dragon head logo, a reduced footprint, and a dovetailed thumb disc, showcasing both a modern touch and precision craftsmanship.
Fun Fact: The dragon head symbolizes Etz Nab (or Etz’nab), the Mayan God of flint tools and edge weapons.
Innovation Meets Classic Design
The original Mariner came out in the 80's but reimagining the design with modern techniques and standards came with challenges. It's our first time using a dovetailed thumb disc that utilizes compression from a set screw to secure it in place and a liner lock that is held by the backspace – increasing its retention.
We loved the Mariner 2 R&D process since we could discuss the design directly with Bob, had a functional model in hand, which was a great starting point, and our main priority was to honor the original as best as possible, which felt pretty cool. Hopefully, this is the first of many classic designs we can bring back into production.
40+ Years and Counting
Vintage micarta, also known as "old stock," is a broad term applying to phenolic composites made decades ago by companies like Westinghouse, Bakelite, GE (Textolite), and International Paper, to name a few. At this point, it's impossible to say the exact age or manufacturer of most of these materials – suffice it to say they were made some time before Y2K and after the signing of the Magna Carta.
