A practical, more stainless alternative to SRK and SRK-C
I was looking for a solid alternative to the Cold Steel SRK that could handle firewood batoning, offer stainless performance, and still excel at food prep, especially steaks. The SRK in VG-10 was about 20 to 30 dollars more and not ideal for repeated batoning. After narrowing my search to AEB-L, the Camp 180 stood out as the best solution.The blade is very easy to sharpen, and while it has some weight to it, the balance and grip feel secure and confidence-inspiring. The G-10 handle has just enough texture to lock into the hand without being overly aggressive. I can already see a paracord wrap in this knife’s future, but even stock, the handle feels more abuse-friendly than the rubber grip on the SRK.One detail that really grew on me is the blade geometry. The flat spine, reinforced swedge toward the tip, subtle upward sweep of the cutting edge, and reduced yet functional finger guard give it an unexpected character. It oddly resembles Japanese-style tanto with a Western influence; a bit of bloodline from a Bowie, part Japanese tanto. “Bowshido,” as I jokingly call it.For those looking to reduce carry bulk, the factory belt clip can be swapped out for an Ulticlip Slim 3.3. It sits with a slight cant, not perfectly straight, but that actually helps with deployment.I still like my SRK, but it’s now a backup. The Camp 180 has earned its place as my primary camp knife.
