TOPS Knives

Tex Creek is a 34,000 acre wildlife management area which includes two national forests (Tex Creek is unit number 69 on the Idaho Fish and Game hunting maps). It is home to an abundance of diverse wildlife and is accessible starting about 10 miles from the TOPS facility. Open range, high rugged mountains, waterways and large forests provide the hunter and fisherman a variety of terrain to acquire elk, bear, mountain lion, wolf, moose, mule deer, pheasant, turkey, quail, rabbit, duck, goose, steelhead and salmon.

It's a great example of a high-quality, good-looking, work knife. It has a coyote tan powder coat and comes with a quality brown leather sheath. The handles are designed and built for a comfortable grip even after extended periods of use, and with the Rocky Mountain Bull's-eye handle scales, you'll have a solid purchase too. This is only TOPS's second knife model to be offered with this grip pattern.

TOPS VP, Leo Espinoza, originally designed this knife for himself. It was going to be his hunting knife for the season. It ended up being such a great design that they had to turn it into a production model. The Tex Creek 69, therefore, is a tribute to the men and women who hunt and fish in the Tex Creek area of Southeast Idaho.

Tex Creek 69
My first impression was that this knife is heavier than it looks in pics and videos. Slight drop point profile, straight plain edge with a slight re-curve as it approaches the choil. The knife is heavier than I expected for such a small knife because the full length tang blade is quite thick at 0.197" (with the coating). The semi-rough finish on the coated blade drags when slicing. The coating finished looks great...... but hinders cutting performance due to drag. This blade is sharp as a razor and has a flat grind. The blade spine has been ground flat and has coarsely spaced thumb jimping just in front of the handle. Great for push cuts and bearing down. Love the handle. The handle thickness is 0.766" at the widest point and features their Rocky Mountain Bull’s Eye scallop cuts in the handle sides. The scallop cuts and the lower handle finger contoured profile provide a very secure grip and feels great for my med/large hands. The single hollow brass handle tube / lanyard hole measures 5/16” I.D.. Love the rounded edges of the rectangle natural micarta with red liners. I wish the micarta had a rougher surface finish as it feels a little slick even with all the oil removed.The bad. My knife was shipped with a nice brown leather belt sheath. The only real complaint I have is that the sheath had so much oil on it, it soaked the micarta! I had to wash the entire knife and handle five times in Dawn soap to get the oil out of the scales. TOPS should know better than to ship a sheath that is absolutely soaked in oil. It was so wet with oil...... it would almost drip off when the sheath was bent in half! That's ridiculous! Other than that.................I love this knife. Giving it a 4 out of 5 because of the sheath.Great job on this beautiful knife. Not so great on the sheath prep.BTW...........I bought another TOPS knife (Dragon Fly 4.5) and it's sheath was also soaking wet as well (actually even more so) and it soaked the micarta scales on that knife too. Shame on TOPS. I'm plan to store both sheaths in white rice for a while to hopefully absorb the oil out of the sheath.

A Modern Classic
If TOPS had a, ‘knife of the month club,’ you could sign me up. They come out with so many new, interesting, and innovative designs. Well, this is not one of them. This is a beautiful, ‘classic’ drop point hunter with point, curves, notches, and edges in all the right places. The Rocky Mountain Bulls-eye Micarta slabs on the 69 are my favorite TOPS grip, or any other knife maker’s Micarta grips. The grip is comfortable, ergonomic, ruggedly handsome, and you won’t look like some tac-weenie/mall-ninja out in the bush. They did the sheath up right, too. I hate those leather sheaths where they bury the knife so far in that you have to attach a lanyard to the handle, just to get it out. Briar patches and wait-a-minute vines have an insatiable appetite for fixed blades with lanyards attached, and they’ll latch on to your knife slicker than a pickpocket on a crowded subway platform. Tex Creek is just the right size for deer/medium sized game, and seems well balanced. Good belly, and nice long primary grind for slicing. I hope to put it to the test in next few days on some wild asparagus, and morel mushrooms. Definitely stout enough for light bush craft. TOPS ought to make this, ‘Miss April,’ on the TOPS Calendar. Picture Tex Creek 69 in a fern covered glade, perched atop the up-turned bill of a baseball cap, brimming-over with morel mushrooms. Now that’s, purdy, right thar ; )

Tex Creek improved
The handle scales are about 1/16" thicker on each side to accomodate the tread, which makes the handle feel meatier and more secure in any size hand. Everything you love about the Tex Creek is better in this version.
