Description

SP12GS: Civilian G-10

Spyderco

In the 1990s Spyderco was approached by a specialized branch of U.S. law enforcement about making a knife for their undercover agents. These plain-clothes LEOs found themselves in situations where they often could not carry a firearm but carrying a knife was not a problem. Most had no formal training in self-defense tactics or MBC but as a last resort could use a blade to protect or extricate themselves from a life-threatening situation. This was how the Civilian model came to be.

The Civilian has a patented reverse "S" blade that's intended to be used like an oversized claw. The tip is ground to an ultra-thin profile. Deeply curved and full at the belly, the VG-10 hollow-ground blade excels in slicing and is available fully SpyderEdged. Because of its distinctly specialized features it is not intended or designed for general utility or everyday use. Curved in all the right places for ergonomic use and retention of the knife, the handle is black G-10. Mounted for tip-down carry with a custom curved black clip, the knife rides deeply and unobtrusively in a pocket. One of the most specialized CLIPITS in the Spyderco line-up, the Civilian is available in limited quantities.

The best, most intimidating blade made
Don’t get me wrong, I love my Civilian. It’s a pure self defense blade. It’s not just dangerous to the target but also the holder! The first time I opened mine, I poked my finger with its tip. My finger bled for two days! It’s an extremely sharp tip. Now I’ve owned a pair and have it figured out. Spyderco engineered it for defense, not by fatality but by blood. It’s specifically designed to use without training in knife fighting techniques - allowing the wielder to literally throw haymakers and catch a couple limbs in the meantime You won’t be opening boxes You won’t be cutting wood or starting firesI suppose you could cut small pieces of kindlingThe action, steel, and deployment is similar to the racking of a shotgun. Enough to keep most bad guys at distance and/or run/leave the area. It truly is the most effective, dangerous blade in existence IMHO. No failures to deploy or tracks to ride on an OTF. No dagger or dual side blade. Just a pure defensive build that doesn’t fail or break lock - a differentiator between Civ and the Matriarch. The extra c note charged is well worth the investment. Again, engineered to NOT cause fatal damage but disabling the attacker if they persist. Do respect it when you get it, and know the Spydie hole works well to deploy as well as any other Spyderco and is not a fidget weapon. Its purpose is obvious and while I have not had to use it, I have had to deploy it twice. Both times the thief/or worse immediately left. One casually looking back at my primary weapon, a 9mm. Neither returned. One ran fast. I have two as losing one would be bad but I have a backup. Have a professional knife smith sharpen it, you will have a good looking hand by doing so. I’m well versed sharpening knives, not so much with serrated blades but I can get the job done with a lengthy sharpening session but I cut myself without gloves. Again, just my opinion but it is easily the best pocketable folder for a single purpose. Defending yourself and loved ones from an attacker who intends to do harm. I’m close to timing my primary and secondary deployment. The Civ being secondary to a deadly or lethal intent attacker. There’s nothing else it’s built for.

Wow. Just wow
I’ve been a Spyderco fan for decades now but wasn’t introduced to the Civilian until 2020. One look/feel/flick and you have to have one in your life. PeriodIf you’re used to knives, you know safety is always first. But with this (someone mentioned in another review the same) blade, the second time I opened it to show my brother (and we’re old! 50’s and should know better). I poked the tip of my finger and I swear it bled for two days. I didn’t cut myself or drop the blade on a toe. I somehow touched the monster and it bit hard. This as has been said many times here but more importantly by its mother what it is and why it was designed. Deep cover and unable to carry anything but a knife, but untrained in CQ. knife skills… this is all you need Haymakers with it won’t kill but it will make a criminal or a person trying to hurt you bleed like a siv. It did me and I like me. It’s truly one to be taken seriously. Sleep with your guns in a safe with kids around. And when you have a need for a get off me tool, make sure it’s on you. These situations may require a primary but plenty of situations that isn’t allowed when your blade is. And in those situations, you likely won’t have to hurt anyone. The damn thing is as intimidating as the rack of a 12 gauge!Be careful with it but don’t hesitate to get one if you’re situation requires a tool like this.

Protection tool
These were bought as gifts. I own, carry, and use the big brother to these. I know the design to be very easy to use, even for untrained user's. This knife is a tool designed for combat/defense. Some knives do a lot of things ok. This knife does ONE thing very very well. If you need that ONE thing, this is the knife.
