Hogue Knives

The engineers at Hogue Knives strive to create solutions by design and to overcome obstacles that challenge their customers in the midst of specialized pursuits. With the variable needs of the hunter at the forefront of this project, Jim and Scott Bruhns created an ultra-lightweight fixed blade knife to conquer the aspects of field dressing that require longer, deeper cuts. The Extrak is comprised of CPM-M4 high vanadium tool steel that allows more time to be spent under the knife and less time sharpening. It weighs 1.9 ounces and also features removable G10 scales with Peel Ply texture. This enables proper gription and gives the user the option to further reduce overall pack weight. Both the Extrak and the Expel are included with nylon blade guards for added protection when stowed.

The Extrak fixed blade has been rigorously tested and proven by professional hunters, outfitters, and taxidermists. Every Hogue knife is proudly made in the USA and backed by three generations of manufacturing expertise.

Small but sharp!
I'm not sure why I bought this but I have a weakness for steels like CPM-M4. I had some idea of carrying it but its ended up in my manbag as a back-up knife. Its definitely small and light enough to carry but the weak point of fixed blades is the sheath system and this one has the same problem. The sheath is fine but the ULTI CLIP thingie it comes with is a problem. I can confirm it does takes a small Tek-lok or a Spyderco G-clip, both of which work well in my experience. It also comes with a plastic blade cover, so you can roll that way if you just want to keep it in your pack.The knife itself has good ergos and is big enough to get four fingers around the handle. It is an absolute scalpel in terms of sharpness. I would have liked slightly thicker scales on it but I guess the idea is to have a small, lightweight knife for packing out. Not sure if M4 is the best thing for skinning though because its a tool steel and will rust, especially if blood is involved, so you'd have to watch that closely. I don't hunt but even if you use it to cut fruit, it will rust if you're not careful. The blade is coated by the edge is not! That said M4 is an amazing steel and will cut like nobody's business. If you're a fan, you know what I'm talking about.

Nice light weight small fixed blade
As advertised. Handle feel is excellent and comes razor sharp. 2 different sheath options are a great selling point on this super light knife that is ideal for edc. My only possible negative is the chance of corrosion on the m4 blade when using in a fishing/boating/camping application.

Perfect smaller fixed blade
This knife is amazing for anybody looking for a smaller fixed blade. It comes super sharp out of the box and no surprise being it's a Hogue, all the grinds are perfect. This knife is practically weightless, great for hunting, fishing, camping, back packing, and even makes a great pocket fixed blade. I've used this in all the scenarios listed above and it has performed flawlessly. My only regret is that it wasn't available during my active duty day's because it is perfect for a CQB scenario. Though I preferred 4-5 inch blades the 3.3 in blade is completely adequate. It's the lack of weight, combined with it's design and blade steel that set it apart from others. Most of my folders weigh more than this guy. I cannot say enough good things. It's not gonna be a chopper, not a great blade to baton least batoning very small kindling, but for every other task this knife excells. I love it and recommend this as a great add on to any collection or as a stand alone purchase.
