Fallkniven

The Taiga knives are distinctive hunting and all-around knives for the demanding user. A strong blade in laminated cobalt steel does not only mean a stable function, but you also notice quite quickly that the edge holds the sharpness really well without being brittle. The reason is fine, well heat treated and tempered steel but also the convex-shaped edge that is not only strong but also wood-sharp. The ergonomic shape of the handle provides a secure grip regardless of weather and wind.

If you look at the function and most value for money, the rubber-handle Taiga blades should be preferred. Regardless of the weather and wind, the rubber handle gives a really good grip and when it comes to the steel properties they are of course as good as the knives with wooden handles.

The Sheath

What is a bit special about these knives is the very secure plastic sheath where a specially designed locking system ensures that the knife is properly locked when it is placed in the sheath. It works regardless of weather and wind, sand, or snow.

About locking the sheath . . .
IIt's very sharp and strong. To lock the knife in the sheath, I meant to say make sure the knife is fully inserted. The sheath will lock easily. All I would have wanted to know before ordering is the not-quite fullness of the tang. But is that worth the price difference between the rubber and wood-handled versions? Not for me. I like the rubber handles. The knife is plenty strong. To resist the temptation of batoning wood with this or my S1xb knife, I had my Estwing Sportsman's ax re-sharpened, and intend to carry it in the woods, along with either knife. The ax represents some extra weight, but not a great deal. I alternate between carrying a Sven saw and a 7-inch lock-bladed Silky sawThank you Knife Center. You folks are great.

It's a Fallkniven; of course it earned five stars.
Relax folks. While the wood-handled version shows a full tang, the rubber-handled version has an almost-full tang. According to Fallkniven's very helpful Peter Hjortberger, the tang on this rubber-handled knife extends to within 2-3 MM of the handle's end. "So, it's a very strong construction . . . ," he said.While Fallkniven describes this blade as being "wood sharp," mine would hve to dull somewhat to achieve that. Yep, it's really sharp.I plan to carry this in situations when its "big brother," the Fallkniven S1Xb would seem too threatening. It should cut almost anything the S1 can cut. Before using the locking mechanism on the sheath, remove the knife from the sheath, and re-insert the knife before locking it in. Seems to work better.A short note: I carry knives like this for emergency use. When I read that someone paid lots of money for an obviously good knife, but uses it to cut cardboard boxes and dog food, I want to shout, "Get a utility knife!." To each his own. If it works, it works. I think Fallkniven, ESEE and some others, make great knives for emergency and other rough use; I simply try to avoid spending a night in the woods. Been there; done that. At a windy 15 degrees, it was no fun, even with a fire, and ample firewood, and with my college roommate.Thanks again Knife Center. You folks are fabulous.
