CR7914DIN: Hammond Desert Cruiser, Partially Serrated

Columbia River Knife & Tool

Jim Hammond's Cruiser is a multi-purpose folder that has garnered much praise.

The Cruiser abounds with design subtleties. For example, the handle features a forward slanted friction grooved thumb ramp and a deep finger choil for the index finger, allowing what is known as the "fencer's grip".

To simplify the clean open build, a unique blade stop channel is CNC machined within the blade. This in turn, allows a friction grooved, tapered blade extension (or flipper) which aids opening the Cruiser, and then neatly completes the finger choil. It has been called "the sweetest flipper in the business."

In translating Jim's custom Cruiser into production, Columbia River used their extremely durable InterFrame build with 420J2 stainless steel liners, one locking. The injection molded black textured Zytel scales featuring their Operator's Grip are radiused and contoured with swells to perfectly fit the hand. The long handle, with a pronounced pommel, feels secure and entirely right.

Their work and sport version of the Cruiser use tough 8CR14MoV stainless steel for the clip-point blade. It has a high hollow grind that curves upward near the tip and a long false top edge, making it an exceptionally versatile work tool. Dual thumb studs and Teflon blade bearings at the blade pivot allow smooth one hand opening and closing.

They've also incorporated the patented Lake And Walker Knife Safety (LAWKS®) into the Cruiser, which makes the folder a virtual fixed blade when engaged.

To give the Cruiser maximum utility in a variety of work situations, Columbia River had Jim design a special paddle style pocket clip, which can be attached in four positions: tip up, tip down, left or right. (The Cruiser is not designed for tip-up in-pocket carry.) Two clips and extra torx screws are included. The stainless steel clips are Teflon plated.

Excellent, rugged tool!
I’ve had lots of knives i’ve used and collected throughout the years, including a tour in Iraq as a young Marine, and realize that i don’t need something fancy and expensive for general utility tasks. I’m now in the Army and in a hunt for a deployment knife. As i was flipping through the pages of my Knives book, i came across the older version of this knife, the desert cruiser. It had pretty decent review and when i saw that this was still available at such a cheap price,i couldn’t pass it up. As soon as i held it in my hands, i knew this was it. The ergonomics is amazing! I removed the clip on mine because i plan to put it in a sheath. Yes, it’s a little on the heavy side, but it feels very solid. The knife steel is adequate. It’ll dull quicker than the more premium ones, but i know how to sharpen knives and it’s no big deal. Overall, i think this is now my new favorite folder. This is something i’m not afraid to beat on, and for the price, i can just get a couple more. Highly recommend it!

Pros: Blade Sharpness, Handle Material, Overall Quality, Lock Type, Handle Feel, Pocket Clip, None
Cons: Lock Ease of Use, Weight
Great Handle
Definitely the nicest handle I've ever come across in a folder. Extremely comfortable, fits your hand like a glove, the texture makes it very grippy, and it's a big beefy handle so it's great for people with big hands or long fingers. You can get a really solid grip, and it has the manual blade safety, so it's a great knife for heavy cutting tasks that require a lot of force like cutting carpets & such. It comes with an extra pocket clip so you can carry tip up or down.On the con side it's pretty big & heavy... not my first choice for EDC. And the handle is more of a brown color than the tan color it looks like in the picture. And the thumb stud is pretty close to the handle making it a little hard to open that way, but it has a flipper also which works great so that makes up for it. The manual safety works well ... but I'd rather have the automatic safety like on some of Columbia's other knives.Overall a great heavy duty folder, the blade is very sharp.
