GB30000840: Propel AO

Gerber

An all-purpose tactical knife needs to feel familiar and capable, like a well-worn tool, yet still offer quick action and hold up to long-term use. Drawing on critical feedback from military and law enforcement personnel plus its decades of knife design experience, Gerber set out to design a full-size, assisted-opening knife that's as easy to handle and carry as it is durable and capable. The Gerber Propel AO knife is this knife. It's a full-size tactical knife with a slim handle profile that fits comfortably in your pocket and hand.Built to LastA tactical knife is sure to see a variety of uses, so Gerber uses 420 high-carbon steel to give you a dependable edge. Add a G10 composite handle and you've got an incredibly durable knife. Additionally, the Propel AO features a safer deployment than that of most AO knives. In deploying the blade of a typical Assisted Open knife, users simply apply pressure to the ambidextrous thumb stud. However, in the case of the Propel AO, instead of applying pressure upwards and parallel to the knife's case, the blade will deploy when engaged at about 45 degrees to the side. This, along with the knife's narrow aperture of blade access, ensures the blade doesn't deploy accidentally while being pulled with speed from the pocket. Once the blade is engaged it can be locked into place during use. The tanto-style blade's black oxide coating adds a stealth element, while its partial serration adds all-purpose utility for working through stubborn materials like nylon rope and thick plastic.Adjustable ClipPersonal preference dictates how you carry your knife, so Gerber designed the Propel AO with a three-way adjustable clip to customize the knife's orientation in your pocket or on your belt. You can set it for tip-up or tip-down storage and left-hand or right-hand bias.Comfortable, Discreet CarryTo deserve daily use status, a utilitarian knife like the Propel AO needs to feel good in your hand and in your pocket. The composite G10 handle's textured surface optimizes grip security in all conditions and maintains a slim profile that complements the knife's balanced feel, while the reliable plunge lock and safety switch secure the blade where you want it, be it open or stowed in your pocket. But most importantly, you get a full-size tactical knife that carries discreetly and comfortably, on the job and off.

Complete Garbage
I had extremely high hopes for this knife. I have a Gerber 30-000134 F.A.S.T. Technology Serrated Edge Slate Knife that I bought 12 years ago that I was hoping to replace it with this one. I waited about 3 weeks for it to ship and arrive. I initially thought I was doing something wrong to open it since it was very gritty and hard to open. Nope, it's just garbage. The older knife is completely head and shoulders above this new one. Gerber claims this new one is made in the US but I have my doubts since nowhere does it state where it's actually made. Their quality is no where near what it used to be or even close to what I was expecting. Also, this knife is about the dullest knife is purchased. To compare, I bought a Morakniv Mora at the same time. You can shave your arm with Morakniv where the Gerber is about as dull as a butter knife. I don't blame The Knife Center at all for this. We'll see how a warranty claim works with Gerber.

Great quality & focus points throughout
Have had this knife for nearly 2 wks & is now in my top 3 EDCs.The lock function is very ideal: I always appreciate a knife that lets you reinforce the lock on blade, for both open & closed positions. You can disengage & close single-handed, a major plus to me. Handle texture ensures a great grip, and the knife has a good heft - it is heavy for its size but not so much that it's a bother. What I appreciate the most is the design for the assisted opening that requires you to pressure the thumb stud at 45 degrees, rather than 90. I love this b/c I think of a scary mistake I made a few yrs back where I managed to leave a knife out at home and feared one of the stepchildren might tamper with it. Luckily I realized soon enough after leaving home & got my wife to find it before the kids woke up. But the implementation of this assisted-open is such that children can't open it and that's HUGE for me. In fact I had a lot of trouble opening when I received it and thought the knife was defective; then I remembered the details I'd read about pressuring the stud at 45 degrees. I only had one event in 6 yrs where I mistakenly left a knife out, but with this knife IF it happened again I'd feel relief that there'd be no danger involved with my [step]kids. BTW the knife arrived sharp enough to shave the hair off the back of my hand, that's another plus. Been cutting boxes & wires/cables for 8 days with no signs of dulling.

Great Knife
This knife is well made and well worth the price. I use this in law enforcement as a working knife and it has never failed. The blade is tough and tougher then other high end knifes we use.I'm still really impressed with the blade. The handle grips really grab and ensure a proper grip. With the grips and the belt clip you won't have to worry about this knife working its way out of your pocket and loosing it. This is one of my go to, favorite knives.
